Please don't laugh
I just traded the WRX wagon on an '06 Jetta TDI. Like it a lot (though it'll never be described as 'peppy'), already getting around 40mpg without trying hard.
EXCEPT: The shift knob is a chintzy piece of rubber with a black plastic cap on the end that gets SCREAMING hot in the sun. I'd like to replace it with a nice solid wooden knob, maybe a burl or Macassar ebony or something. But damned if I can't find anything online. Anyone have any ideas? FWIW our kindly host generates a lovely error page when I try to find something: http://www.pelicanparts.com/euro/catalog/shopcart/W079_catalog.htm --> http://www.pelicanparts.com/euro/catalog/shopcart/W079/POR_W079_INTacc_pg1.htm I'm looking for something classy, btw. Not ricey. |

There was a solid platinum shift knob on eBay a few months ago...seller was only asking $70,000 or so. Real classy....
|
i think there is a tire for sale on eBay for 10K. Buy that and cut a hunk off, then super glue to the knob. Cooler *and* better hand traction...

A buddy of mine recently got one. He's getting mileage in the 40's, but says that according to some online forums as the engine breaks in that should go up into the 50's.

Real men don't need knobs.
|
Have you considered simply putting a sock on it?
|
I drove a friend's the other day. It was dog slow (automatic), but he says he's getting close to 50mpg so I guess that makes up for no performance. I told him he could probably turn up the boost and make more power, but he said he'd rather have the mileage. Overall pretty nice car though.

my Ducati gets 40+ mpg and will toast most cars. Plus I can carry a passenger in comfort and a couple bags of groceries.
I'd rather have the bike... |

I don't think so. (PS: My VFR gets 47 mpg on 87 octane, so there) |
does the steering wheel not get that hot? it's one of the reasons i used to like suede steering wheels. never got too hot like shiny leather etc...

What kind of 'cati you have? I've been contemplating another bike (currently have a '99 Katana 750, which is a great commuter bike). Somethinig a little hotter and sportier for canyon romping and stuff. There's just something about the sound of those Italian bikes. . .

Steering wheel is a sorta flat black pebbly rubber...the shift knob topper is a glossy black plastic with chrome trimmings.
Shift knob definitely gets hotter. |
