it appears that the sevens were 'nice' numbers. predominant throughout the times. so does this mean that 6 or 666 was just assigned to have a connotation w/ evil simply b/c it was a lesser number than 7? it could have just as well been number 5 then, right?

Numbers in the Bible have a symbolic meaning. So, to break down 666 is simple:

This is all about end-times stuff. Apocolypse, four horsemen, Christ's return - all that jazzy stuff.

First off, 666 comes from Revelation 13 in the Bible. This chapter describes two beasts: one that rises out of the sea, and the other that rises out of the earth. The first is what many call the false prophet; the second is referred to as the anti-christ. At the end of Revelation 13, this is said of the antichrist: "Let him who has understanding calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of man: His number is 666."

Six is the symbol of man. Why? Partly because God created man on the sixth day of creation. (Ref: Genesis 1:27, 31: "So God created man in His own image...So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.) Another reason that 6 is used to represent man is because 7 is often used as a symbol for completeness, or God. Since man was created in God's image, yet not God, he is symbolized as the next number below seven.

There are three sixes in 666. Three often represents God. This is seen in both the old and new teastaments, believe it or not. Most clearly, this is seen in the Trinity: The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit: the "Three in One."

So, if we put them together, we can interpret 666 as being "Man being like, or imitating God." Which is what the antichrist is: in the end times, he will claim to be god. The false prophet will be his right hand man, and the two of them will conquer the kingdoms of the world and rule over them.

After a period of time, Christ will return and conquer the antichrist.

In a nutshell, that's what 666 is about.

PS: My views are of a "premillenial / pre-tribulation end times," which is one of the interpretations of the scriptures regarding the end of the world. If you heard of or read the Left Behind series of books, their interpretation of the events leading to the end times are the same as mine.

Oh, and one more thing: many ask, "Is today the end of the world?" I don't think so - the Bible also stated "You do not know the day nor the hour of My return." So the end is kept a mystery from us. Also, if today were it (Christ's return) there would have been other significant events that should have occurred which havent. So I advise you NOT to sell your house and buy a white robe. You can climb up your favorite mountain, but do it for the excerise - 'cause I don't think you're going to see any hell-fire-brimestone or Christ's army returning just yet...
