Vegas Vacation?

Thinking of a trip to Vegas this summer, had some questions.

Is it too hot to go in late July or August?

What hotel would you stay in?

Thanks!

some quick answers:

1. If you want to do anything outside--yes( I was there 3 weeks ago and the temps were 95-98 every day.

2. depends on what you have in mind--couples trip, family, partying, etc..

Don't know what there is to do outside. Not big on gambling. Mainly interested in shows, live music and dinning.

Would be traveling my GF, we're not big party people.

I went there for July 4th two yrs. ago and loved it. It was hot, but dry and tolerable. I hate shows and like to gamble. Still, I took a day trip drive to Death Valley - totally amazing. And we went to Zion Nat. Park the next day, also amazing. I wish I could find a good job and relo. package to that or the Phoenix area. I love that part of the country.

John, late July early August is VERY hot (at least 110) but dry (not that it helps much). Probably the worst time to come if you want to do things outside (i.e. walking). At night cools down and is very pleasant for a stroll up and down the Strip.

Regarding hotels, the big names (Bellagio, Wynn, Venetian, Four Seasons) are always a winner. New York New York, MGM, Mandalay Bay are the 'usual' ones.

It will depends what do you want to do and how much money do you want to spend. Check places like the Aladin, New York New York and the Montecarlo for good mid-off-week rates.

Let me know if you need any help making your decission(s), after all I live here.

There is lots to do in Vegas besides gambling. The hotels are magnificent and you can spend two days just wandering the strip and taking it all in. There are some fabulous shows in Vegas but they are expensive. It is extremely hot outside May thru August.

I'm heading to Vegas for a work getaway weekend June 22-25. Work has gone all out for us-- planned a day helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon, we are seeing Cirque du Soleil's 'O' and they have rented a cabana (with A/C and a bartender) by the pool. Should be a great trip.

It is not to hot if you are a gila monster You might try some of the older hotel like the Flamingo which is well located but not as fancy as some of the others mentioned. It may be cheaper.

Take the tour of Hoover Dam. Visit the auto museum at the Imperial Palace.

I just read my comment below and yes I have been to Vegas too many times and yes I am jaded so take this with a grain of salt:

I guess Vegas has changed a bunch but (not trying to be a smarta$$... really!) if your not into gambling or partying why go to Vegas? I know there is some interesting architecture with all the giant resorts however (for me) after you have been to a few mega casinos they all start to blend into one.

I do suppose if you have never been it is one of those places you have to see once in your life.

Good news is when it is stinking hot some hotels lower their prices. Most hotels have super nice pool facilities to cool off. Also the Mega resorts are so big you don't have to go outside if you don't want to, there is plenty of food, shopping, and entertainment all in one location.

Great deals on little hotels sprinkled in between the resorts but then you don't get the all under one roof convenience (you will have to go outside in the heat) although if you are on the strip it is only about a fifteen minute stroll to anything. On the other hand if you are going with a girlfriend you will probably want to stay at one of the fancy joints.

I don't gamble, but Vegas is not to be missed. World-class resorts. Fine dining like no where else. Great golf courses, shopping, museums, fine art and debauchery...oh! the debauchery. I LOVE Vegas!

Don't want to be pissy but I doubt many people go golfing in the summer when it is 120 degrees outside.
Art and museums... sure they tacked a few on but they can't compete with the east coast cities.
Debauchery? With hidden cameras and plain cloths cops/security guards everywhere that is not what it used to be.

Don't get me wrong it still a destination "must see" city, nothing like it.

I guess I prefer the old Vegas that catered to drunks, gamblers, and you know what.
but I'm not bitter

Okay just so I don't sound like Mr. anti-Vegas.

Presuming you are going to stay at a mega resort, there are several that are/were connected by a monorail (read you don't have to go outside)... anyone know if it is still there and running? It was free but I don't think it is anymore, they also had a cheap bus that ran up and down the strip but sitting at the bus stop in summer can be brutal.

I'll see if I can dig up some of my old LV hotel links, what is your budget for a hotel?

I was digging around expedia, looking at 4+star places. I'd say 2-250 isn't out of the question.

This will keep you busy for awhile:

http://www.vegas.com/

http://www.lasvegas.com/

http://www.lvol.com/

This is the monorail, it has expanded since I was last there and they do charge. Note that it runs behind the casinos so it may be a short walk, don't know if any of the casinos have stops in, near, or connected to their building, click on route map.

http://www.lvmonorail.com/

Then again if you want to go first class every resort has a row of taxis lined up in front.

Are you night people? Going outside at night isn't too bad. What is your idea of a long walk? The old casinos are close to each other but the new mega resorts it can be a hundred yards to the strip and a half mile between establishments, then because of the giant scale of everything it looks like it's not that far away but a stroll to the next casino can turn into a hike.
