What would I use to secure this gate?

Problem is - as is, the hoop can be easily bent outwards and walk right in. Source for a BIG, short cable?

Actually a good tug on the gate usually results in the entire latch rotating on the pipe. A good push puts it back where it was originally. Or vise versa.

As a Surveyor I used this trick to enter back yards all the time.

Also - Beggin Strips will tame 98% of the dogs I have encountered. I have probably dealt with over 100 dogs over the years and only had 2 that come to mind that would not let me in the yard after a feeding.

I second the bicycle shop idea.

Other problem is that a semi-robust bolt-cutter will cut most padlocks like butter.

Nonetheless I keep our outer gate padlocked in hopes it's at least a psychological deterrant for the mischievous neighborhood kids (who're probably too lazy or dumb to jump the fence.)

Get a U-lock.

OF course, even those are "easy" to defeat. There was a rash of bike thefts here in Gainesville in the late 80s/early 90s. Seems a physics student who was a lab "manager" let his no good dorm mate know what happens to stuff after having liquid nitrogen poured over it and being whacked with a hammer.
