Sex vs Violence

I just overheard some soccer mom caterwalering about not wanting her kids to see boobies in video games (even though that story is 3 or 4 months old, but apparently she just not got wind of it) but the fact that they're playing video games in which you bust a cap in people's asses all day long doesn't seem to faze her one bit. She didn't mention the violence at all but just couldn't shut up about the how "inappropriate" and "immoral" the boobies were.

Why are Americans so afraid of nekkid women, but gratuitious violence is OK?

"It's for the children!" Yeah, right.

Honestly, which would be the more traumatic experience for your kid to witness in person - a couple gettin' it on, or a murder? Assume they don't know any of the parties involved, and (hopefully!) aren't involved themselves.

If sex is really so bad, then why don't they have post-traumatic counselors for when kids walk in on their parents, like they do for school shootings?

What makes it even more bizarre, is nudity and sex is something they will be involved with themselves some day, but it's an off-limits subject. Gratuitous killing and maiming is something they shouldn't be doing, but hey, it's cool.

In person - tough choice. Movie - no question. Here is the deal - a murder in a movie is fake - sex in a movie is real. So I'd choose the former for sure.

Real life, I would not have much control over if any or both my kids see. I can however, choose not to bring movies or games into the house. Which I do.

i'd rather have my son see sex in person or in a movie. we are way too desensitized to violence, and way too hung up on sex (and not in a good way)

Buff stuff was a no-no when I was a kid. You know how those uptight Catholic households are.

Meanwhile, I received plenty of Sam Peckinpah movies...

I figure I'm pretty normal. Now excuse me: I have to finish skinning the neighbor kid's pet hamster.

Agree 100%.

Show a boob being touched in a movie and get NC-17 or X. Show a boob being cut off and get an R rating.

I saw a murdered man when a was 15 years old in Hells Kitchen. He was laying on the sidewalk wit his head slit open and blood everywhere. I was in my Dads delivery truck at the time and we drove past. What blew me awy was the people around. Most were walking by and not even reacting. To this day 25 years later it is still etched in my mind.

And I bet you can't even recall the names or faces of some people you went to bed with! I know I can't.

Kids see boobs from day one. Then they are put away for a long time. No need to be in your face about it, but no need to be so uptight either.

Those of you from other countries....do you have the sex related crimes problems we have here in the US?

Where's the "neither" option?

It should be up to a parent to decide when to expose their kids to these things. Funny how people don't object to sex and violence being preached in our culture and things we sell to kids, but Christianity is socially taboo.

Tits are no big deal, but once that barrier is past, what next? Where do you "expose the kids to sex, we're too uptight about it" parents draw the line? Male erections? Hard core porn on freeway billboards OK with you?

Seriously, I agree about the billboards. Sometimes one can barely drive down a street with their kid in the car without feeling their child is being vicariously violated.

As to Christianity and broadcast - give it time. It'll come back - or at least some of it will. The entertainment industry goes through waves. Now we're in some ridiculous self-centered, self-reflective wave a la "Crash" where we need to point the obvious out to ourselves.

I thought family - not altogether "Christian" per se programming was big in the late-60s to mid-70s with The Waltons and Little House on The Prarie. If anything, those shows were really well written and produced, and demonstrated television can tell good dramatic stories about people other than cops and lawyers.

Seriously and no offense but that particular phenomenon, especially in your country, has always struck me as odd. I canīt help but to believe it has a lot to do with Martin Luther, Christianity and the whole concept of sin. It all seem to have started with a couple of nice, albeit nude, kids. Minding their own business in some pre historic suburb called Eden. Something about apples and snakes. The Big man upstairs had a fit and banned everything having to do with genitals, breasts and sex. For some reason killing appears to be less abusive to Him.

I never could figure it out.

The violence stuff is obvious fantasy, heck cartoons are full of it....kids know the difference. Rational people will NEVER copy those acts nor do they have to fight the desire to.

Sex is very doable and accessible at any age and kids should not be exposed to things that they are not emotionally ready for. I for one know that my sexual life started shortly after finding my first Playboy, shortly there after the neighbor girl and I......well you get the idea. It was great at the time, but we were WAAAAAAAYYYYYY too young for what was going on. It was a bad thing especially for her as she turned into a sexual nut (not in a good way). Anyway you get the idea.

I have seen hundreds of thousands of violent acts in movies, even when very young etc... yet have never performed one myself.

The idea that the two can be compared is silly.

It seems to me that we want our kids to have sex when they grow up, but we don't want them to kill people. So I say if a teenage boy is seeking out pictures of boobs then don't get in his way.

Violence? I like watching violent movies from time to time. Face it, violence is a part of us. The fitest humans survived because they kicked a**. But I think a little moderation is called for.

That would be my first question too. I suppose He figured he could not do with out sex - as long as it was restricted to the purposeful act of creating more people. Doing it for the sake of shear fun and pleasure does not seem to appeal to Him.

I said I did not mean any offense - and I did not. I admit to a certain degree of irony but also to a gross lack of insight when it comes to religious issues. Simply because I do not believe (yet). I do however believe that the answer to the original question to an extent can be found in religious beliefs and tradition.

Sorry if it came out disrespectful.
