Wearing a suit without a tie?

What do you guys think about wearing a suit without a tie? My only sport coat is cashmere- wrong season for that.

I have a dressier evening event to attend and was thinking of wearing my tan suit with a light blue shirt, no tie (tie is not necessary). I also have a dark brown suit with blue pinstripes- maybe that would be better for an evening event?

Would you wear a suit sans tie?

I have done it and it looks nice when the shirt is not over the top.

I never ever ever wear a tie with my suit (pin stripe Armani). Of course someone always makes a comment but I always get compliments.

Yeah--I will wear a suit without a tie on various occasions.

It all depends upon the event.
Some events where I have forgone a tie:
Company X-mas party
outdoor wedding
charity dinners
cocktail parties
theatre

When I wear a tie
"uppity" dinners
anything involving being in a church/house of worship
opera
formal weddings

Summertime is definatley more relaxed for attire--go for it. you can even jazz it up with a french-cuff shirt or a pocket square.

Cool- I have a french-cuffed (Freedom Cuffs?) shirt and some nice cufflinks I planned to wear to jazz it up.

make sure your undershirt is a v-neck--you don't want it visible with the top button of your dress shirt undone.

Mock turtleneck. Or light sweater or even "polo" type shirt but buttoned all the way up to the top. Or....

I'm going to stick my neck out and give a traditionalist's reply. No, I wouldn't wear a suit without a tie. I definitely wouldn't wear french cuffs and no tie. Why don't you want to wear a tie? What's wrong with the cashmere coat?

I think it looks pretentious. It's one thing to wear a suit for work and go out for beers afterwards and take off the tie and unbutton the top button. It's another thing completely to wear a glorified t-shirt underneath a jacket.

To me, when I show up to an event and someone is dressed that way...I know I'm with the wrong crowd.

My wife and I are heading to Burns Steak house next month with another couple we are close friends with.

15 years ago whenI first went there it was all suits and ties and I was dressed appropriatly. 10 years ago the same.
6 years ago, some suits and ties but more t-shirts and polo shirts and dockers. (sidenote - up until 6 years ago I never heard one cel phone ring in the place, now people are on them at the table = rude!) 2 years ago the only ones wearing suits were the much older fellows (60+) the 30 somethings and 40 somethings were all "dressed down" This time I wore a suit with a dress shirt and no tie.

I think I will wear a tie again next time I go. I will advise my friend to do the same. Maybe make a statement to the rest of the crowd, although I doubt they care.

When I was in Miami and went to the Forge I wore a dress shirt and suit no tie and fit in perfectly with the crowd. Which was very hip, and I felt I blended in better when I went to the Delano afterwards.

I think it depends a lot on the crowd. Tampa Florida? Yeah a siut will work with a tie, South Beach Miami? Only if your a drug lord then probably not anyway. Not these days.

I just went to Berns Steakhouse 2 weeks ago. I wore a dress shirt (striped, dark, Banana Repub.) and tan slacks. The other partons were dressed about the same except for a few jeans & shorts wearers. I would have felt way over dressed in a coat and tie.

Get the dessert wine sampler and apple pie upstairs. Good stuff.

Let me be straight, I usually wear a polo shirt and dockers to work or a dress shirt sans tie with dress pants. A suit on very rare occassions. I just don't like the suit-with-t-shirt look.

I like the tie option.
Of course my tie collection is extensive. A big part of my ties were given to me from my Grandfather who worked in the state capital in the 40's 50's & 60's. So when ever I get a chance I where a tie. Looks classy I think.

How long have you been going there? I swear 15 years ago you probably would not be seated in there without a jacket and tie. How times have changed.

Your making me rething my attire. I felt kind of funny in there with a suit on last time, sort of like I was hokey for getting dressed up for the place. I will probably wear slacks and a shirt instead and skip the jacket all together.

Personally, I'm not keen on the suit no tie look. To me, it says, "I know it is a formal event, but I'm too cool to wear a tie."

Buy a blue blazer. You can go open collar, mock turtleneck or tie with slacks or khakis. It's the most versatile thing you can have. When I traveled internationally a lot, I wore a navy blue suit - and the jacket would double as a faux blazer with a pair of slacks.

There is no such thing as overdressed.

You should never wear a shirt with french cuffs unless it is with a suit, you also should wear a tie with french cuffs.
