Angry Stealing Steal!

Woke up this morning and found our patio furniture was stolen. We live in a small town, quiet neighborhood but I guess crime has no boundaries. The 4 piece set was made of heavy wrought iron. Police said "THEY" are being caught taking shopping carts of steal from construction sites. They sell it to the yards for melt down and quick cash. So we are out a $600 set that we bought piece by piece until the set was complete so some crack head can spend the weekend on top of the world. Sorry, just had to vent.

You have every right to vent. Just another example of the disintegration of our society.

I heard on the radio today that some areas are having problems with cemetary vase's being stolen, apparently they are bronze and people are stealing them and selling them for scrap metal. Talk about bad karma !!!

The local police set up some stings lately that got almost every scrap dealer in Vancouver. They took everything the undercover cops brought them: phone booths, wire, even a ladder marked "Vancouver Fire Department". They even provided an area and tools to strip insulation from wiring and whatnot. After the busts they found some bronze grave markers amongst the stuff to be shreaded or melted, too. These people have no shame, both the theives and the dealers who are buying everything brought to them.

In other news, some guy was fried a week or so ago while stealing wiring that was still live...there's your karma.

We live in a pretty up-scale area. Had a rash of burglaries from some a$$wipes coming up from the Springs. Guess we were easy targets, people too trusting. I asked a cop about the 'make my day law' and told him I was surprised these idiots would rob houses, knowing the owner could be packing. The cop was pretty funny and said "just let them open the door a bit before you fire".

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY

The crime occurred in Kinston, NC. We talked to a neighbor across the street who informed us of coupons in his mail box being stolen. He found the rest of his mail up the street in the gutter with coupons clipped. The lady next door had a plant dug gen up and stolen from outside her back door. I think we really need to get serious with security at the homestead.

ps. Talked to and insurance buddy that was telling me about a church claim he did where crosses and other metal objects were stolen in VA.

My Dad lives in Monument...what is the, "make my day law"? I can assume the general nature, but do you have specifics?

I'm wondering - what would be the legal fallout in the UK if you made metal objects "hot" in the UK - and someone tried to steal them and got a sudden reality check? Set it on a pressure plate, pressure releived - activated current.

A guy at work had his heavy metal mail box stolen in broad daylight, same thing happened to his neighbor.

Check out this article.. Here's an excerpt.

Copping copper

As metal prices rise, thieves are stripping pipes, wiring and profit from homes

12:00 AM CDT on Friday, June 16, 2006

By STEVE BROWN / The Dallas Morning News

Dallas homebuilder Jeff Dworkin has seen his share of job site thefts.

Builder Jeff Dworkin has had copper stolen from his work sites. This house is near White Rock Lake in Dallas.

But when thieves snatched the copper coolant lines for air conditioning at one of his homes under construction, he realized that he would have to take extra steps to guard his projects.

"I had never seen that done before because it wasn't that much copper," said Mr. Dworkin, who's been in the building business for almost 20 years.

"They actually had to climb into the attic and cut the supply line and pull it through the house."

With prices for copper building materials near a record, homebuilders are sometimes paying twice.

First they have to come up with the extra money to buy copper wiring and plumbing materials. Then they have to pay again, if thieves cart off the copper fixtures.

"With the copper prices increasing, our level of theft has risen dramatically," Mr. Dworkin said.

Copper prices have more than doubled in the last 12 months partly becauseof speculation in the metals markets. Although the price of the metal retreated earlier this week, costs of many copper building materials remain at all-time highs.

If there is an oil shortage - expect that to change as they steal it to recycle!
