Senator Rick Santorum and classified WMD documents

Just listening to the Sean Hannity show and PA Senator Rick Santorum called in and disclosed that he has copies of classified documents proving that WMD that have been found in Iraq.

The Senator said that he has documents stating that there are over 500 cases where shells or containers with poisonous gas have been found in the country and that they fully expect to find more.

Evidently there will be a radio or television show tonight with Hannity and several others, and the Senator will be part of the show. Could be interesting and wonder how the liberals will whitewash this?

DaveE 06-21-2006 03:08 PM

If they are pre-'91 shells that's hardly news. If it's something recent, I would expect to see 'Breaking News' all over TV, not Santorum on Hannity, but, whatever.

I'd have to wonder why the administration didn't disclose this before, especially when the left keeps chanting that there were no WMD?

Hugh,

That is my main question on this as well. Coming from some news program I would not mention it, but coming from a US Senator, its worth looking at to see "the rest of the story" so to speak.

Dave,

I could care less when the weapons are from. If they are still useable, then they are dangerous and could be used against anyone.

Senator Santorum Makes Major Announcement Regarding Newly Declassified Information Concerning Chemical Weapons Discovered in Iraq
“This is critically important information that the world community needs to know” – Senator Santorum

June 21, 2006
Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, joined Congressman Peter Hoekstra, (R-MI-2), Chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, today to make a major announcement regarding the release of newly declassified information that proves the existence of chemical munitions in Iraq since 2003. The information was released by the Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, and contained an unclassified summary of analysis conducted by the National Ground Intelligence Center. In March, Senator Santorum began advocating for the release of these documents to the American public.

“The information released today proves that weapons of mass destruction are, in fact, in Iraq,” said Senator Santorum. “It is essential for the American people to understand that these weapons are in Iraq. I will continue to advocate for the complete declassification of this report so we can more fully understand the complete WMD picture inside Iraq.”

The following are the six key points contained in the unclassified overview:

• Since 2003 Coalition forces have recovered approximately 500 weapons munitions which contain degraded mustard or sarin nerve agent.

• Despite many efforts to locate and destroy Iraq’s pre-Gulf War chemical munitions, filled and unfilled pre-Gulf War chemical munitions are assessed to still exist.

• Pre-Gulf War Iraqi chemical weapons could be sold on the black market. Use of these weapons by terrorists or insurgent groups would have implications for Coalition forces in Iraq. The possibility of use outside Iraq cannot be ruled out.

• The most likely munitions remaining are sarin and mustard-filled projectiles.

• The purity of the agent inside the munitions depends on many factors, including the manufacturing process, potential additives, and environmental storage conditions. While agents degrade over time, chemical warfare agents remain hazardous and potentially lethal.

• It has been reported in open press that insurgents and Iraqi groups desire to acquire and use chemical weapons.

Sounds like old, useless junk, but they still could be used to cause "terror," if not mass casualties.

Doesn't seem like we've found the smoking gun, though.

Old useless junk that can still kill thousands, if not hundreds of thousands. There is more to be found, otherwise Saddam would have let the UN inspectors in the country to look...

If we did you lefties will say we didn't...The fact is WMD WERE found, however degraded, and Saddam certainly, without question, had plans to evolve and expand his WMD programs.

Agreed, certainly no smoking gun, not even the stockpiles of WMD that we thought there were going in.

That's probably why the admin didn't make a big deal out of this. If true, though, it certainly disproves the "there were NO WMD in Iraq" mantra...

I think they still find unexploded bombs in Great Britain and Europe too.

Just admit your side are a bunch of lying POS...The only reason the WMD issue ever got any traction is because the Democrats own the media, and the media omits or commits based on their agenda...Only the most biased leftist liar would offer that Saddam hadn't WMD. The world consensus was that Saddam had them. NOBODY was saying he didn't have them, except perhaps some of his partners in crime over at the UN.

DaveE 06-21-2006 04:29 PM

We all knew he had remnants of what WE sold him in the '80s. That's no freakin surprise. It's humorous to watch straw-grasping though. By the way, Santorum's on his way out too, or into the lobbyist ranks.

Do you have a credible link to that lie?...What we sold him in the 80s?

DaveE 06-21-2006 04:36 PM

Probably no link that would meet YOUR definition of credible.

At least try...That way you can have some credible argument that I am biased and close-minded....The key is "credible."...Pro-communist or hard-leftist or al jazeera will not suffice.

Just found one last week in Germany, right near the World Cup stadium. Cleared everyone out for a mile and defused it.

Difference is that the ones in Europe and the UK are not being hidden and that Saddam was hiding these. Again, why would he not allow the UN inspectors in? If there was nothing to hide then no reason for baring the inspectors.

Dave, please remember that France, Germany and Russia as well sold Saddam huge amounts of weapons and the materials to make much, much more. Stop trying to hang all the guilt on your home country.

This declassified document is about as close as you can get.
"We also know that Iraq has acquired a CW production capability, primarily from Western firms, including possibly a U.S. foreign subsidiary."

Not exactly damning evidence that the U.S. government was selling them weapons.

Reagan NEVER sold Saddam WMD...It is one of the many big lies the left have on continuous loop.

DaveE 06-21-2006 05:04 PM

Try this, the CDC for example. You may have to dig through the document. It's a rather official Congressional type document.
