So Whats This Master of Champions Show Anyway?
Now that there will not be a game 6, ABC will air something called the Master of Champions? Looks interesting enough - trailors had a women shooting a bow with her feet and a tractor being driftparked. Is this just a spin on a veriety show or do these people get judged and move to the next week for the endgoal of being crowned "Master of the Champions"?

Here's a write up on the show
Master of Champions is a weekly one hour variety competition format where uniquely skilled people perform and compete to win the title Master Champion. Each episode consists of two challenge programs and three individual programs. Each will be judged and scored by a panel of respected professionals. At the end of the hour, the top three competitors will be put in front of the audience for final judgment: The audience will decide who will become the next Master Champion… The Competitors Each episode will feature seven competitors. Two in each of the challenge programs and three in the individual programs. Through video packages, in-studio interviews, or loved ones present in the studio, we will learn what it took to get here, by highlighting the disappointments, the people, and the triumphs that shaped each of the competitors. Only the challenge program competitors will have video profile packages done on them (4 packages per show). Individual program competitors will be interviewed on the show along with someone significant in their lives (who will be present in the studio during the competition). The Competitive Programs Each episode will have two challenge programs and three individual programs. The programs will not only push the limits of the competitor’s skills, but they will all have their own unique twists and sense of humor. I mean, in all seriousness, it is quite possible that we could see a remote controlled helicopter preparing breakfast – piloted by the skillful hands of a 9 year old. Each challenge program is an elaborate competition where two competitors face off by performing the same program. The judges will comment and determine a winner of the challenge. Only the winning competitor is eligible for the audience vote at the end of the show. The competitors in the challenge programs are given an opportunity to show off their abilities before their program begins. These previews will help the judges (and the audience) see just how skilled the competitors really are. And the judges will use them to talk up the horse race… Who’s the best? Do they think this individual program is better that the last one? Who do they think will win? The individual program will feature three single competitors each performing a different and unique skill. Each competitor will then take turns in front of the judges to get their individual scores. The highest scoring individual program will take the remaining spot for the audience vote. The Audience Vote On this show, the live audience always has a say. As a matter of fact it’s the studio audience who will choose the Master Champion in every episode. At the end of the show, the three program winners go before audience to receive the final verdict. A replay gets us up to speed before the votes are locked in. One by one the scores are revealed. First reveal is third place. Then it’s time to announce the winner. And the next Master Champion is… The Judges The show will have a three judge panel. Each will cast as a character on the show. Their stinging expert opinions, strong personalities, and their interactions with the host will help bring the show to life. The three judges will also be champions in their own right. And will consist of a title winning professional athlete, a professional stunt man/woman, and a well respected performer (actor, singer, dancer, etc.). The Scoring At the end of each program (challenge or individual), competitors are evaluated and scored by the judges. Like in professional figure skating, every competitor is scored in the following three categories: Technical skill, artistry, and performance. In the challenge programs, the highest scoring competitor of the two wins the challenge and is automatically eligible for the audience vote. And as for the loser, it’s the end of the road. In the individual programs, only the highest scoring individual competitor moves on to the audience vote. The Host and Co-host The host is the master of ceremonies and will set up the challenges, introduce the acts, and banter with the judges. He is the confident anchor of the show who’s always in command of his audience. He sets the tone, and adds a certain legitimacy to the proceedings. The co-host will take on the role of correspondent, blow-by-blow commentator and official guinea pig. Every episode, will feature the co-host as he takes a front seat in a challenge to experience what we can only watch… The dress code is classy. Hosts, judges and on camera crew are dressed formally to add to the legitimacy of the show. The Tone While the tone of the show is fun, we never take cheap shots at the competitors expense. Every person appearing on the show will have dedicated a part of their lives to honing their unique skills, and for that they deserve respect. A live house band will perform the theme music, underscore, music for the challenges, and bumper stings – really giving the show a live feel. The Set Conceptually, the set is the home of the show. Like the Magic Castle, the Master of Champions set is a place that will define and celebrate the achievements of uniquely skilled people. Serious, stylish and dramatic are three words that describe the set. Appearing circular in shape, it will be a warm colored interpretation of a variety show. Glossy floors, dramatic lighting changes, and playful music cues will reinforce the seriousness of the competition. The judges will be featured prominently near the center stage, where they hold court (until the audience vote). Built into the set architecture will be a significant spot for the actual Masters Cup trophy, and its placement will also be the location where the results of the audience vote is revealed and a winner is “crowned”. Master Champion Few people have unique skills, even fewer can entertain people using these skills - For the very few who can do both exceptionally well, this is the chance they have been waiting for… Like winning the Stanley Cup, the Master Champion will see their name forever etched onto the studio trophy, the Master Cup. The cup is placed at the heart of the set and acts as a reminder of the many who have championed, and the many who have yet to entertain us with their skills. Every episode climaxes with the ceremonious inscription of the Master Champion’s name onto the cup. Winning is a matter of honor, and an inscription on the Cup is the highest honor bestowed to a uniquely skilled person. In addition, the winning competitor, based on performance and audience popularity, will be given the title Master Champion.

Hugh, cool write-up! Is this the kind of thing that a prospective producer would use to pitch the network and/or investors? I would also imagine it would be supported with some demographic surveys and analysis?
Oh ya, any cash for the winners?

Mike:
Yeah that's the original "Treatment" for pitching the show. Sorry, I don't know about prize money. But I do know that the "contestants" all do whatever gag they do professionally, meaning they get paid for do it at carnivals, circuses, auto dealership openings, whatever. I believe the production company pays each contestant to perform for the show. This is a "Hands-Off" show meaning we don't insure it, we buy the finished product and air it.

This is the type of show that makes you stop during a surf and gaze for 15 minutes and think "what the heck..."
You guys take this much too seriously! This is good ol variety TV! If they added a few comic skits, maybe a 30 second cartoon each week and a song or two by some up and coming bluegrass or folk group you could have the next great show.

Have peoples lives become so pathetic that they need to watch this garbage? What happened to all the comedy writers?? I agree with Mike on one aspect. at least its a type of variety show, and not one of these dating, wife-swapping, commune living shows.

There is currently ONE tv show that I watch (House, usually just to see what their latest butchery of medical science will be, but sometimes to glean a new put-down to use on my coworkers), and I usually miss it anyway because of martial arts classes. On the good side, it looks like Paramount dropped the prices on the ST:TNG series DVDs by about 50%. Anyone else notice this?

You guys are expecting way too much from the boobtube - remember the 3 Stooges? Gilligans Island? The Pat Paulson Show? Bugs Bunny? Johnny Quest? the WWF when it had Killer Kowallski, Chief Jay Strongbow and Andre the Giant as regulars? All "crap" but it was entertaining.
Why not get your intellectual fix from OT threads and the local bookstore coffee shop...
