PPI... is it about trust?
My wife wants a different car, so we have been looking at a lot of ads - both here, and on other websites. Anyhow, a question came up that I want to pose here for comment. (Maybe nobody should reply to this out of respect to fellow Pelican Porsche enthusiasts.)
You never want to buy a car site-unseen, but sometimes geography and work schedules really make it impractical to see your potential purchase first hand. Do you guys (and gals) in the Pelican community trust one another to the point you would buy a Pelicans car site unseen? If not, do you have another Pelican go and do a PPI for you? And since you didn't trust the Pelican seller, why do you trust the Pelican PPIer? Or is the PPI not about trust, but more about having a second set of eyes to look the car over? Still, why do you trust that second set of eyes? Is the PPIer a mechanic... or an accountant? etc. etc. ...and then there is eBay - where you may need a second, third, and forth opinion, but only have a few auction days in which to get'er done. :( |
To me, it's about wanting to know what I'm getting into. The best maintained car in the world could have a few things about to go the current owner is not aware of.
I bought my 951 from a fellow Pelican. I had a PPI done. It had nothing to do with whether or not I trusted him. It was partially because the car was so far away (Boston), and partially because I was going to drive it home so I wanted to make sure it would make the trip. |
No,
Just reality. Some people actively try to misrepresent what they have, but that probably is not the case if you buy from here, because everyone would hear about it sooner or later. On the other hand, honest mistakes happen. Why go through the bother of he said she said when you can have someone go through the car who is supposed to know what to look for. That being said, some PPI's I've had done were pretty worthless. I move for a standard form to fill out (one of the most descriptive and complete jobs was by Marque Motors, Portland, OR) |
I never buy sight unseen. I don't care who's car it is. I have someone check it out. Bottom line it may their car and you want it but it's YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY.
Do some research and find some one in that area who will really look at the vehicle for you. It's smart money. Yours. |
