Ferrari F-355???

I just got an email in from a retired friend, living in Florida.
He's looking at a 1999 F355 Fiorano Edition Spider. I know zilch about Ferrari, other than thinking the Daytona Spider was something else. So, any input here appreciated, as well as a link to the Ferrari chat room? I'll pass a link to this thread along to my friend.

To keep this sort of Porsche oriented, here's Roger's thinking on why he's looking at this (yellow) Ferrari...a cut & paste:

My thinking: Porsche was where it was all at in the early 1970's with the best being the S's and RS. No one could compete with them in their hay day and I'm fortunate to have lived in Germany at that time and enjoyed not only my RS and the 77 German Carrera's I owned. I cant afford one now and good ones like yours are virtually impossible to find. I wasn't as fond of the 98 C2S for several reasons: it was too electrical dependent, (almost a nightmare sometimes when I wanted in the car, and was trying to start the car after leaving it set disconnected from power for any length of time) a blip in the electrical department and you don't know where to turn, I didn't like black as a color as it was too labor intensive to keep looking like you want a car like that to look, and an automatic transmission really suits me; with paddle shifting being a hoot and negating the automatic transmission stigma with the purists, such as the Tiptronic, which never was esthetically appealing to me. If you've got to go water cooled, I like the idea of something that's always been water cooled, rather that water cooling a rear engine car....

A 355 is a good balance of technology and rawness, imho. I think he'll like the feel. After driving the Stradale, the 993 feels like a pickup truck. I'd imagine an older lightweight 911 would feel nice and raw, but, well, they're ancient technology. If he wants something that feels like a full on racecar for the street, a 355 spider will give him that. Nothing like a Ferrari shrieking at redline - its very addicting.

I have driven my friends 355. Makes my Porsche's old 915 tranny feel soft and smooth.

Great car, beautiful sound but it shifts like an old Harvester.

I've driven a 512BB and the clutch was so hard to depress that I needed to take a rest after doing a k-turn.

Thanks guys, I think the one Rog is looking at has the paddle shifter things...I found his observations as an owner of a C2S interesting. I thought of getting one, but I'd have had to sell my '72 to do it. Then I tried to get my 6'3" fat ol' bod into a 993...not enough legroom. Anyway, hope he's learning more over in the Ferrari chat room.

From a F-Chat thread:

355 FIORANO EDITION

This is one of the most sought after Ferraris ever built. 1999 was the last year for the F355 Spider and the Fiorano Edition Spiders were the last 100 produced.

Fifty of the 100 Fiorano Edition Ferraris were imported into the United States. Out of that 50, only 9 are 6 speeds. Out of that 9, only one is known to be black on black.

This F355 Spider Fiorano is most unique with the door jams, console and shift knob made of Carbon Fiber. It also has a leather dash and suede steering wheel, Ferrari floor mats, the Ferrari Badge, car cover, Scuderia Shields, Challenger Grill, and red brake calipers.

Another good Fiorano Fchat thread: http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=23414&highlight=fiorano

No. I'd own them both. C2 will never be sold. In fact, it will be the main purpose behind any pre-nup if I ever get married.

I should mention that Rog never married. Oh, he likes girls, does he EVER....but he stayed single, invested well, also has a nice guaranteed income. So, who else to spend it on but himself? I wrote back, said pretty much the same...that if buying this car didn't make him sacrifice something else he loved...? Goferit! Why not?

I think the 355 is, by far, the best-looking modern Ferrari. The overstyled new models just can't hold a candle to this smooth, elegant, simple design.

Many people regard the 355 as the best looking Ferrari ever.

A friend of mine has an F40. Thats the best Ferrari I have ever seen, next to the GTO a guy in my town had back in the 60's. "that guy" also had a corvett grand sport, and a Ford 427 Cobra. He drove them to community college to take courses in the 60's,
