Is this a scam ebay site?

https://signin.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?co_partnerid=2&siteid=100&UsingSSL=1

Looks legit to me.

They would not ask for your SS# or PIN #.
For the unsuspecting, it would not cause concern.
Scary.

Agree, its a fraud. Try to open it now and its been disabled.

Ebay would never ask for your SSN or ATM PIN.

Um, the url is a real ebay url, not some phishing misdirection. So it IS ebay that's asking for the info, not some credit card scammer. The real question is, why is ebay asking for the info.

If the actual domain in the link is ebay.com, how is it a spoof?

the sentence reading "Please enter as more (sic) information as possible..." should have given it away

I get hundreds of these scams a week. one piece of advice, never ever respond to any email (or whatever) that claims a security breach and then asks you to verify personal information over the web. it is ALWAYS a scam

it's so damned easy to spoof URLs with a redirect

...and how many people ever had to give their SSNs to ebay?

Show me how pasting an ebay.com url (as shown above) into my address bar can produce a non ebay.com site?

I understand how clicking a link that looks like ebay.com can direct you elsewhere, but Terry posted an actual ebay url.

I've heard of redirect scams, but I do not understand how they work.

It seems to me you would have to have access to the hosting account where the domain name servers are actually assigned. It really seems impossible that anyone would be able to make www.ebay.com land anywhere but on the ebay server unless they work at ebay or hack the ebay host.

And given the volume of traffic that ebay has worldwide, it seems like some 2-bit Nigerian operation would not have the capacity to accept the traffic that a host redirect would cause.

I'm sure I've missed something vital. Dammit Jim, I'm a mechanic not an IT engineer.

I just did a search, and it seems there's a lot of ways to execute a redirect from an ebay listing. The other trick is for a virus/worm to hack your local hosts file (low-budget DNS spoof), so that while you think you're going to ebay.com, you're really going somewhere else.

The browser headers can be changed, but the URL..?
Even if this was an iota legit, why would you trust ebay more than a guy with a credit card machine selling candy on the street corner?
The fact they are huge, and well known, doesn't make them any more trustworthy. The fact they are huge means that they probably sub-contract cc processing, which means a whole lot more people on the processing chain has acess to the info.

A cashless/credit society needs to have solid security and verification procedures. Though it's gotten better recently, identity theft as a whole viewed as a single corp would be one of the largest in this country. Obviously the gov hasen't been paying attention.
There are tens, if not hundreds, of information brokering companies LEGALLY selling your personal data, and reports of unsecured/encrypted company databases being compromised happen regularly.

Even schools and other institutions use ss#'s on a casual basis and these can't be considered valid anymore. Identification through retina/fingerprints will work for a while until that data gets copied and figured out how to be sent.
I remember working at a huge community college as a recycler, and finding foot-thick printouts of students name/adress/ss info but when I told the records dept they just shrugged. Tort law is out of control, but if those individuals thought they could be held personally liable, I wonder if they would have a different attitude.

The scary thing is some people on this site have vigerously argued against privacy measures, and I wonder about their motivations......
Cash is king.

If ebay actually sends out emails like the one above, I would hope that they would take the time to proof read it and correct the poor grammer. These scammers should really find someone who masters the english language to write the script.

Read the first 3 sentences carefully - they barely make sense.

Poor grammer from a major corporation is always a tip-off.

AMEN! The most common one I get is supposedly from banks that I never had an account with. Call me an old curmedgeon, but I refuse to give a credit card number over the net. When I order from our host, I place a call...

NEVER respond to ANY site asking for personal information.

Simple as that.

Ignore at your own peril.

If ebay ever legitimately asked for my SSN, I would be absolutely done using ebay.

You want my SSN? Buh-buy.

Let me back up for a second, I got to this page by logging in to My Ebay page and was redirected to this page. It was not an email. Thats why I questioned it.

My IT guy says the there was a virus uploaded that makes my Internet Explorer go to the pages. Only for certain sites.

Pretty ingenious.
