e-mail lookup, being scammed

I have the e-mail address of someone who attempted to scam me. This is not a global scamming deal, rather someone local to me. How can I find out who this is?

Joeaksa 07-05-2006 09:34 AM

Try googleing the email address. Otherwise is the email address a yahoo, AOL or local provider?

Call your local police and talk to the internet fraud guys. They can find it out fast.

dhoward 07-05-2006 09:36 AM

I swear it's not a scam.
You really CAN make $5000/ sitting at home...
;)

I would rather not escalate to that point Joe. I fear this may be someone I know and I would rather handle it my way if possible. I would not mind paying a fee.

And the rest of the information is? Whose ISP is it? AOL, yahoo or a local provider?

lendaddy 07-05-2006 09:46 AM

MSN.com

Joeaksa 07-05-2006 09:48 AM

That does not help at all. If it was a local then that would be a lot easier.

Have you tried googling the email address? Many times it will pop up on a forum or somewhere you can identify the sender.

nostatic 07-05-2006 09:49 AM

what kind of scam? is it worth your time to mess around with it?

Moneyguy1 07-05-2006 09:49 AM

Maybe you are not the only potential victim.

Joeaksa 07-05-2006 09:52 AM

Like Bob said, you may not be the only person getting hit like this.

I have been getting "hang up" phone calls from someone in the 310 area code. Put it into google and found out that this is some scammer in the LA area. They have hit hundreds of guys and are trying to scam money out of them.

See what google comes up with...

They used my PayPal account to purchase a subscription to a site.

lendaddy 07-05-2006 09:55 AM

I should add that I contacted the site and they refunded my money and canceled the sub. They gave me all the info they had on the guy but that was only birthdate and e-mail. They said they could release his IP with a police order.

Moneyguy1 07-05-2006 09:56 AM

Cancel the PayPal?

Too many horror stories for my blood.

lendaddy 07-05-2006 10:09 AM

That's just it, I don't think this was a "hacking" issue. I think it was a person that does have access to my computers at work and they did it. So I am not worried about my info being out-there just yet.

rcecale 07-05-2006 10:16 AM

So, if I understand this correctly, all you have on this person is an e-mail address and thier birthdate, nothing more?

Randy

Correct, I assume I'm screwed.

coloradoporsche 07-05-2006 10:43 AM

You could send them an email ;)

Often scammers will hijack innocent folks' eddress and use them to get info from other folks. Perhaps that's what's happening to you.

Z-man!

You mean the gov has not shut you down too?

Am on the other side of the Hudson this week.

Now back to our regularly scheduled scammer update.

This is solved, appears to be non-mailicious. It's a long story involving the friend of my brother. I'm guessing alcohol was involved. Turns out they attempted to cancel it shortly after creating it realizing that they had used the company PayPal and not his personal one.

Now you are going to tell us that this is how the blow up doll showed up in your office at work?? :)

Glad it worked out...

Hey man - I think it's all part of the plan... once the gov't is halted, then the 'boys' from certain garbage collection agencies can come in and take over!

-Z.

PS: There is no such thing as the mob. If there would be such a thing, they're the nicest bunch of guys I ever met!
