Beer and heartburn???

For the last 10 years I've been battling heartburn. It can be just awful and I have it everyday. I keep bottles of Maalox in my car, on my desk, on my nightstand, etc... Anyway, you get the point.

So anyway, about two weeks ago I decided to give up beer for the most part (not alcohol mind you, but beer in particular). Well, my heartburn has been <50% as bad as it usually is and it seems to be "healing" for lack of a better word.

Does beer cause heartburn?

Beer and heartburn and 911's

One word "nexium" Could be you have acid reflux which should not be ignored. How old are ya matey? A favorite of the 40-60 crowd. Yeh, beer could bother you. I battled this type of problem for many months until my doc prescribed Nexium. It nailed the problem. Now I can eat and drink what I want. I don't really like taking pills but they did the job.

Now I can enjoy my 911 without burping all the time. Is this on-topic or what?

I took Nexium once a year or so ago and it was not as effective as Prilosec OTC, which all but eliminates it. Albeit at a big cost and I don't like the idea of living on medication if I can help it. I see these liquids and tabs as a passive approach that doesn't mess with my body's chemistry.

In the words o Homer Simpson, "little beer will put out that fire".

It might be something in the beer that you are allergic to. My dad had reactions to some beers because of the wheat or grains.

Alcohol, in general, can irritate the stomach and give you acid problems. Cabonation, in general (i.e. carbonic ACID), can give you acid problems. Couple both of these, as in beer, and you get heartburn. Bending over to work on your brakes, while drinking beer, can give you hearburn while working on your 911 (On-topic). Solution: Drink English beer with less carbonation, and get a lift to work on your brakes!) Also, try drinking milk with your meals, it is a natural antacid (base), and tastes better than the Maalox!

acid reflux is a very serious condition - it can lead to cancer of the esophogus (sp?) it's not just irritating, it can really cause serious problems. do go see a doctor. i don't mean to be a downer on this but my father went through this with not good results.

I have gone to a doctor about this and he told me to quite smokin, drinking and to lose some weight. Well I quit smoking and gained weight.......not sure what the net result of that is

Sounds more like "Lifestyle-problems"
Smoking? Too much coffee? Junk food? No exercise? Worries?
Acid Reflux Decease is serious and can lead to cancer of the Esophagus.
Some beers are really just a chemical soup who don't deserve the name: Beer.
Stick with some good Dutch, or German brew. (Not too much though!)
Here in Canada, we have a swill designed for hockey-fans: Labatt and Molson. Horrible stuff but, sells real well and great heart-burn!
I have no burning with Becks or Grolsch beer.

Screw Maalox - buy a box of baking soda, 1/2 tsp in a glass of water. Works immediately. Impressive belches, too. Keep a pre-mixed bottle in your car. Last box I bought was 79 cents, has lasted six months.
And yes, alcohol will stimulate acid secretion, so moderation is the key.

Wow, thanks guys. I'll try the baking soda as well. I admit to massive lifestyle issues, the smoking was step one.....

That's a big step.........stick with it. The Alveoli (Lung tissue responsible for Oxigen-perfusion) will start to heal almost immediately and circulation will improve noticeably.

Better food and a bicycle will help.
