What would you do......

I will be soon shopping for a 4 door sedan and with in couple of years i plan on buying another Porsche, most likely a 996 TT/GT2..
Now the problem is,ever since i sold my Supra TT ( almost a year ago) my son who is 3-1/2 yrs old still is longing for that car.I mean all he buys is Supra toy cars and swear to GOD when i take him to the car shows all he keeps asking me is....Daddy is there any Supra here :(
I know it sounds very childish but would you guys ever consider buying a car just for your kid...I do have friends with Supras so he is able to get rides n that car but there's something about that car that he keeps asking for more and more...
ANY SUGGESTIONS....Please don't be laughing @ me i am very serious...

So, you want to teach your 3 1/2 year old son that he can make you buy anything he wants, including a car that is not the one you really need. Sure, knock yourself out. In a few years, you will have a perfectly spoiled brat...I would not even consider it.

the kid isn't old enough yet to realize he's being spoiled. It could've been a Nissan Sentra he attached to, if you were into that. It's nice that he's got a common bond with you. He knows daddy likes Supras..

depends on how easy is it to obtain another one. Either that or hook him on that 996..

Could be a favorite subject when he's old enough to drive or have kids of his own..

+1 for Randy's comments

No, I wouldn't buy another one just because the kid is obsessed. He'll get over it. He's only 3. He'll have many, many more obsessions over the year, some healthy, some probably not.

I agree...cultivate yours sons interest in the car if you must. Then let him know he can buy his own in a decade plus.

Just got back from MD where we happened to attend a car show and sure enough there was a white Supra in attendance :) Before he spotted the supra we had looked at bright yellow & a bright red Viper,a yellow newer ZO6,black Shelby cobra replica, few camaroes, few hot rods, various color Mitsu evos and lotuses but no excitement until he saw the white Supra.
I wish i had a camera to capture the look on his face when he saw the Supra. The funny part was, when he told my friends 10 year old daughter that this was a white Supra and that he loves supra..It seems like his world revolves around Supras...
Anyway i appreciate all the responses so far and i also agree that it would not be too wise to give in and buy a Supra. However i still think sooner or later depending on his persistence i might actually buy one and keep it for him for i know that the Supra has left a long lasting impression on him..don't forget he was little over 2 when i sold the car and he is now 3-1/2 and he still remembers it

my son cried when we traded the Prelude for the wife's Audi. He wanted to drive by the lot to take one last look. I think he was 3 or 4. Now at 9 he doesn't even know what a Prelude is. He knows the sound of a flat 6 though without even looking.

Besides, buy a Toyota "for the kid"? Is child abuse legal in Kentucky?

People do it ALL the time. I did it Monday. I'll give you a hint, it's not the Targa in the background. :)

Not at 3 1/2.

Porsche-O-Phile 07-09-2006 07:40 PM

Buy the 996TT. He'll grow up appreciating what a real car is - not some flash-in-the-pan fad.

CJFusco 07-09-2006 08:18 PM

Just tell him flat-out: "I sold the supra and bought a 996TT because the Porsche is faster and better" :D Even if it wasn't true, you'd still get the "wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww" effect

Lesson #1 with kids, you train the kid, don't let the kid train you. He's 3-1/2 for Christ's sakes.

I have to second that...You cannot let the inmates run the asylum.

:D

Show him some video of the 996 laying the smack down on a Supra, show him the superiority of German enginneering...Brainwash his little mind with overwhelming fire-power.

My dad tried to by my interest and love with cars and motorcycles and all kinds of various bull. Here's an idea: instead of trying to win his attention and love by owning the things he likes and wants, try being a father of integrity, a living example of how to be man.

My little girl (well when she was 6) used to love riding in my Jeep Wrangler with the top down,.

When I got the 911, she cried because she thought I was going to get rid the Jeep, so I took her for a drive down PCH in the 911 at sunset time. That put a huge smile on her face.

(for the record, I kept them both)
