Last year we chartered a boat in the BVI and the whole family took a short diving course. We did three dives with the dive master (never deeper than 30'). Did a wreck dive on our third day out (this is my then 12 yo daughter):
http://www.plumley.org/photos/trips/...s/image243.jpg It was really great, and having the dive master there watching your kids made it fun for me and the missus. Not sure I'd do it any other way now... http://www.plumley.org/photos/trips/...s/image246.jpg http://www.plumley.org/photos/trips/...s/image240.jpg |
great pics keep em coming! in aug. 1999 got my kids to go diving off of kona. was a total 180 for them. had taught them at home in pool w/my gear and they were literally like fish to water. was a good change over their dirt bike on the brain mentality and subsequent hospital visits for stupid "watch this" stunts. got a different view of the world and how everything depends on the ocean. hopefully they will settle down and take the sport up. i laid the foundation for them. sure beats the hell out of crashing into cholla cactus and wrecking dirt bike!

Great pics Don I tried to get my kids to dive too, but didnt work out. My daughter freaked as soon as she got into open water. ( 4' vis is way different than a pool!) My sons just really had no interest in it.

Vin - they've been snorkling since they were babies, mostly Hawaii, but some other trips through the carribbean too. So it was a real natural transition. But being in the BVI, with their own instructor, in very clear water all made a huge difference.
That being said, we are not signed up for lessons to go off the cold Northern California coast. We'll be warm (clear) water divers with our own divemaster for a long time! |
The Channel Isl's off Santa Barbara in Nov is real nice and very alive. A good 1/4" suit w/hood is fine. Not exactly kid stuff though.
on my 1st scuba lesson I was pushed off a dock into 10' and just about walked out. Then they started manditory BCs yrs later. I had an old Scubapro the factory refused to rebuild anymore so they gave me a special deal I couldn't refuse on an upgrade if they could keep the orig. N NJ has some nice diving for relics if you know the routine. |
I'll stick with muff diving thanks...then there aren't many muffs out there any more!
