This has been posted a few months ago. That said, she is totally correct and will probably be killed for her comments... Thats the way of life in the Middle East, especially for women who speak out against their treatment.

I hope she's in a witness protection program of some sort.

More than that, I hope she gets that message out to as many as possible. Who can argue with that reasoning, except the most closed-minded moron?

There are moderate Middle-Eastern voices, as represented by this courageous and intelligent woman. I hope that the Arab world begins listening to people like her, and that her courage inspires more like her.

Joe, the sad fact is that if she is killed for her beliefs, the murder will be committed by the same type of people that America has sacrificed almost 2,600 lives and a trillion dollars to install in power in Iraq.

Those type of killings, committed by militia-controlled religious "courts," are a daily occurrence in "free" Iraq. Remember the last PM would not shake Condi Rice's hand because she is a woman. The people in power courtesy of the United States think of women the way this woman described: as beasts rather than as free human beings.

I find it interesting that there are people who feel that since we don't hear daily from moderate muslims, who are the vast majority, it means they support the horrendous actions, yet when someone does, people are saying "hope she doesn't get killed."

Tremendous courage. She may pay the ultimate price for telling the truth.

You only have to look at Theo van Gogh to see what very well may be her future. He made a video, with the help of a Moslem woman, about the normal treatment of ladies under the Islamic system.

He was killed a few weeks later by a Moslem man for exposing their ways of life and "critising Allah" so to speak. I really hope that she can avoid this fate.

Exactly. Which is why you don't hear of them, yet there is some sort of belief amongst some that this means they support the horrendous actions.

This is my point.

And don't forget, this lady is not a Muslim.

There are very few moderate ARAB voices, there are next to no moderate MUSLIM voices. At least that I can hear.

That has always been a major issue for me. If their own community, their own culture, can't condemn suicide bombing and all the rest, there is very little hope for change.

It can't be done from the outside, as we are finding out in Iraq. We can help, but cultural and religious change must come from within.

Sadly, you are very, very wrong about this.

Your personal experience is likely limited to islamic expatriates. The world of Islam (outside the U.S.) is shockingly brutal in it's practice and intolerant in it's ideology. It is sexist, rascist and primitive. Unfortunately, the "tolerant" form of Islam that you describe is relatively unusual.

She was. After witnessing her professor being killed by machine guns in the classroom by zealots chanting "God is great!", she decided that perhaps Islam was not her calling.

There is a woman at the day car where we take my son. When I first met her, I extended my hand to shake (because that is what I do to greet people), and she took it. Supposedly she mentioned it to her husband and he got pissed and she was up all night praying about it.

A handshake.

That's my other point. At least that I can hear.

When you hear one speaking out, keep in mind, from the safety of the United States, the comments are "OMG, I hope she doesn't get killed." Valid concern. But if you don't hear, then it's "they support it."

Last year at Hajj, I read about a beautiful speech denouncing terrorism in front of 2 million Muslims. We also have a language barrier (why would denouncements be in English)? That group, Muslims against Terrorism, riots denouncing terrorism after the bombing in London.....

I brought a Muslim's words here once denouncing terrorism....a Muslim that I know.... now is in Saudi Arabia.

We have inner city crime here in my city, and I most certainly don't support it by any means, but I am afraid to get involved. I'm chicken. I admit it.

IMO, it's nuts to think that most support these horrendous acts simply because they are pacifists and maybe simply don't want to die by these crazies in their countries or maybe because we can't read Arabic....

I don't agree.

I will agree that there are some areas outside of the U.S. like that, however.
