Whiskey Country where to go?
I am in Lexingtom Kentucky visiting my brother.
He wants to take me to a Whisky factory tour. Jack Daniels comes to mind but then there is Makers Mark. Then there is Wild Turkey or Jim Beam not sure which tour to take. Only have time for one. I am thinking Makers Mark. My brother also bought a bottle of this Bourbon Beer. 20% Alcohol and tasts good. You would never know it was so strong. Problem is it cannot be bottled. Well it can be but goes flat in a week. So it is sold from a tap into a jug to take home for consumption soon after. Procon if you read this I am bronging back a bottle for you. So back on topic... Which Wiskey tour would you take?

I didn't know Jack Daniels distillery was in Kentucky...

I hear Jack Daniels has a neat facility, but I'd like to see the making of Wild Turkey Rare Breed (special stuff proofed by the barrel).

Jack is in Lynchburg Tn; GREAT FREE tour. Recently went and it was very good. Only thing is Lynchburg sits in a dry county so no samples. Good tour guides and lots of fun. Interesting story of how it all started and survived prohabition.
Makers Mark would be fun to me because I love the stuff. Ben

I assumed it was in this area with all the others. Makers Mark will probably be it.

George Dickel is near Jack Daniels, also. I've been to Jack Daniels a number of times as it is only about an hour from here, tops. Really neat place. ...and I don't even like whiskey...

Maker's Mark tour would be entertaining, but if Woodford reserve offers a tour it is a better bourbon. I don't think they let you sample the Maker's either. I could be wrong, it's been a while since I lived in that area.

Near Lexington, you will have Wild Turkey, Labrot & Graham, and Buffalo Trace for bourbon distilleries.
Labrot & Graham (Woodford Reserve) has the best tourist attraction in the business. Its really a great facility. The rest of the industry has been trying to play catch up to them in this department. The whiskey is garbage, but the facility and the tour are flat out awesome. This operation is owned by Brown-Foreman (Jack Daniels). Buffalo Trace is a smaller facility where everything is still truly handmade. Very cool and a very realistic old school operation where everything is done by hand. It doesn't have half of the dog and a pony feel good charm of Labrot & Graham, but its still very cool. Ive never been to Austin Nichols (Wild Turkey) for a tour, but Im sure they have a good one. Makers Mark is a good 1.5 hrs away from the Lexington airport. If you make the trip to Loretto to go to Makers Mark, make sure you tour Heaven Hill in Bardstown. I don't know about samples, but at Makers, they still let you dip your own bottle in the wax. Last edited by Shuie; 07-15-2006 at 07:07 PM.. |
