Vision advice from the experts
At about 11 years old my vision started going bad with near sidedness. And every time i went in for an exam after that my eyes got worse and worse. I was told that the rear of my eyes would harden at the age of 20ish to keep them from elongating and getting worse. But i'm 22 almost 23 and i can tell that i need another exam now because my prescription is getting weak. What kind of options do i have, is my vision going to always get worse until i'm dead? Does the eye surgery really work as they claim it does to permanently fix the situation?

I am not an eye doc, as you know - but yes, the progression will stop and yes, surgery works.

It's near-sighted, not near sided.
Wait until the progression stops before you get surgery. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nearsighted |
Thanks for the correction, when does the progression typically stop for people. I was told that it's around 20 (like what i stated earlier), so i'm hoping soon.

I was about 29-30 when my eyes stabilized. I was a candidate for Lasik and jumped on it. Much better that I don't have to deal with all the contact stuff now.

My son is in the same boat, at 21. His doctor has said much the same, just wait till it happens. The doctor also said that usage contributed, working too close or too long on the computer made it worse. Change the focus point often, in other words stare off in the distance!

Myopia and IQ (From Wikipedia)
Many studies have shown a relationship between myopia and IQ. According to Arthur Jensen, myopes average 7-8 IQ points higher than non-myopes. The relationship also holds within families, and siblings with a higher degree of refraction error average higher IQs than siblings with less refraction error. Jensen believes that this indicates myopia and IQ are pleiotropically related (both myopia and IQ are caused by the same genes). The mechanism that has caused a relationship between myopia and IQ is not yet known with certainty (Jensen, 1998). Must mean you're getting smarter and smarter! |
Must mean i'm screwed, i'm getting dumber and blinder ;)

My vision stabilized somewhere in my mid-20s. I got wavefront guided LASIK about 2 years ago, best medical decision I have made. They took my eyes from 20/400 to 20/12. Simply amazing.

My eyesight levelled off when I was about 27-28. I too am now considering laser eye surgery, I keep losing glasses overboard.
