Can you respect the man who?????

I caught my first episode of "Driving Force" last night and was saddened by the man John Force appears to be. No doubt he is at the top of the game when it comes to AA/FC and running a multi million dollar business but as a husband, father and man he sucks IMHO. After building a big house he's exiled off to the guest house because his wife can't stand to be around him for more than a couple hours. They have been "separated" for nearly 7 years and not divorced, yet he continues to support the wife and girls in a rather privileged lifestyle. Out of four girls I didn't see that anyone of them had any respect for him, no less love for a father. Granted he appears clueless as to how to be a father and trying to start now when his youngest is in her late teens is hopeless. (Ask me how I know)
Like Boyd Coddington I had far more respect for these men as role models before they started displaying their lives on tv.
What say you?

the guys a dick...

I haven't seen the John Force show, but I totally agree with you regarding Boyd Coddington. Boyd's shop does not look like a fun place to work.

Neither does the OCC chopper show. I watch Discovery and History channels a lot when at hotels and everytime those idiots who build choppers come on I change the channel or turn it off.

Most of these shows are edited with a bias.

You can sometimes see the "real" person, but the ameliorating circumstances in each episode's dramatic confrontations are left out.

On the surface, it sounds like Force is a dickhead... but does the woman who marries a driven guy deserve any of the responsibility?

sammyg2 07-20-2006 09:34 AM

"reality" TV is about as real an an infomercial.
They take a concept and build it up to get ratings. If Forcy appeared to be a regular guy the show would crash and burn.
Same with boyd coddington, what you see on TV is not necessarily what you get in real life.
I dont know John force personally (he's a local) but I have friends who know him, they all say the show is silly.
Yes, he has focused too on his career and not his family, that is obvious.
But how many of us can say that is not the case at least a litle bit?
How many times havwe we choose to work on our Porsche or go on a drive with friends instead of going to the park and playing catch with the kids?
I know I havespent more time on my job and my hobbies than I should have but we all do the best we can.
Judge not lest ye be judged and all that. Especially based on a dumb made up TV show.

I root for John when he races, not when he goes to a PTA meeting.

KevinP73 07-20-2006 09:35 AM

Last night while watching Driving Force I kept noticing the looks on the girls faces and on the wife (especially when the camera was not directly on them) and they all looked like they would rather be having a root canal w/o Novocaine. Thats something that cannot be edited in or out or presented with bias.
Personally I have NO respect for a man who accepts an exile from his own house at the will of any woman. Far as I'm concerned if the b!tch isn't happy SHE'S the one who needs to find a new trailer to live in.

How can you have any respect for anyone who would even be on one of these shows? Doubtless it's as scripted as any soap opra.

John Force? After reading articles about him in Autoweek and Racer magazines I am not suprised his homelife is a mess.

OCC - I used to frequent an RX-7 board and a member there was from OC and went to, get this, bible sudy group with the Tuttles. He was in their church and knew them well. He said everyone in the church was VERY shocked at their behaviour on TV especially the cursing. He said once the show came out they did not go to church anymore.

Funny, it seems like Hulk Hogan makes a better reality TV dad and general person, than any of these guys.

I agree Hulk seems like an almost "normal" guy. I really liked the episode where he sat some little romeo down and told him if he puts one hand on his daughter again he's gonna hurt him badly.
My vote for "Best Reality Show Parents" goes to the parents on "Little People Big World". They come across as just your everyday good neighbors.

It may seem like I watch a lot of this crap but I do not. My exposure to John Force is from articles in Racer magazine and other car mags I read. He seams to be the "peoples hero" I see him as a piece of white trash with money.

I tuned into hogens show by accident one night and it was a marathon of a bunch of old shows in a row. I have sat down and watched his shows in a row twice.

He's best drag racer in history, both from a winning standpoint and from the ability to control a car.
He is famous for his "pedal fests" where the tires go up in smoke, he catches it, pedals the throttle, and saves it to win the race no matter how sideways the car gets.
10 years ago almost no one would do that, except John. The reason was that is was not considered safe to do it. These engines cannot be run at partial throttle, it is either on or off and even then pedaling the car can and often doses cause a catistrophic emplosion.
Everyone else would just give up and coast down, John would get back in the throttle over and over and not give up until the race was over.
Pedaling a car is more common now as most drivers have studied the films and learned how to do it.
John is also famous for his rambling during interviews where he talks fast and shares a whole bunch of phrases and cliches that show his character.
He is a good old boy who calls his car "this ole hot rod" and describes a race like "boy she was really trucking near the big end" and will wear the same white nomex race suit until it is nearly black from a fire.
He does not fit the mold but has a huge fan base because regular guys can identify with him.
He is also a target for some of the other drivers, Whit Bazemore has tried over and over to get a feud going but John doesn't want to play, he just ignores Whit and it drives him crazy. Well, except for that one time when John had enough and punched him out............

I concur... why would anyone make such an a$$ of themselves with a camera crew sitting there in their face. It's all about the Benjamen's baby!

Being a long time "run what ya brung" drag racer myself, I took my brother in law and nephew to Forces digs in Yorba Linda for a car club meet (non P car). John was most gracious and affable. He autographed my nephews shirt and talked to the 3 of us like he was a neighbor. He then reminisced about losing one of his championship rings in a newspaper rack outside a diner. I left thinking nothing other than I just met Mr. Cool!

Of course this has nothing to do with his personal life, but who would watch a TV show if their life was like most of ours? I did miss this show, so I didn't see how bad his family relationships are, but I suppose like most dads that are away from home 45 weeks a year, it is strained.

scottmandue 07-20-2006 02:25 PM

I can hardly stand to watch OCC (reminds me of when I worked for my dad) mostly because of prepubescent destructive behavior i.e. setting fire to things, breaking glass, etc. (same goes for Jesse James) however the few times I have seen the show if you look cafully at their faces they all look like they are on the verge of laughter... it' a load of BS.
