Cicada Killer Wasps
Got a bunch of these huge things flying around the front yard. Raid doesn't even stun them. Any experience? I've read that they don't often sting, but they're very territorial and aggressive. I don't want my 13 mo old's first bee sting to be from one of these monsters.

Oh my! Speaking of wasps...I had to get rid of a wasp nest that was in one of the supports on my balcony overhang. That was less than pleasant.
There are also plenty "wasp killer" sprays out there that work quite well. They just drop. The good thing is that the cans are very highly pressuzied and can squirt quite a distance - just in case you dont want to get stung.

I keep seeing your posts with a variety of ghastly insects and spiders. Thats one advantage with living up in cold Scandinavia. Perhaps the only one. Well, there are the blonds, of course..

When I lived in North Texas these things were all over the place. I never got stung nor did I ever here of any one that did. Unlike most wasps thes guys are not social type insects. They live solitary in a burrow in the ground. The coolest part for me is to see one of these wasps smash to the ground with a cicada firmly in thier grasp and then fly off. The cicada looked twice the size of the wasp but with enough airspeed he would finally gain enough altitude to fly off for what I suspect was a scrumptious (for them anyway) meal.

two other interesting and painful flying bugs, flying red ants and the assassin bug here in az. got nailed while asleep on left ring finger(bump size of an m&m candy) and numerous other places on back. they fly and crawl, very sneaky and only come out at night, crawl on host(me) and suck your blood until full. when full of blood they cannot fly. when you nail one on the ground-kersplatt! blood everywhere! kinda like a big overgrown wood tick! have killed the hell out of them on sight!
flying red ants leave a nice welt that itches to beat the band! oh the joys of summer!!!!!! scorpions bring out the best in us! when we find one in garage late at night, we grab wd-40 and imoliate them until toast! leaves a very nice tattoo of their body on concrete. same goes for centipedes! when rattlesnakes found we dont suggest the wd-40 treatment! then its time for...........THE FULL AUTOMATIC TRUE-TEMPER ROUND NOSE SHOVEL EXTRAVAGANZA! thats when things get REAL EXCITING! I MEAN REAL DAMN EXCITING! the worst thing is finding one, then running for shovel and come back ready for WAR............and the bastards gone!!!!!! now that will get your blood going real good, for you know he his lurking somewhere!!!!!! shovels and hoes are located around property strategically just for this purpose!!!!! |

We have two types of Assassin Bugs around here that I've seen. Both are carnivorous not the bloodsucking kind. First is the Bee Assassin which I've only seen with a Japanese beetle in it's grasp, and the Wheel Bug which was also preying on JB's. They have a very interesting way of eating them. Unfortunately, they don't kill enough of the beetle's to be an effective biological control on them. The Wheel bug will bite if you attempt to pick it up, but they usually fly away well before that can happen. Stink Bugs are their cousins.

the is a wasp in japan that makes all our bugs look like cartoon characters from that "bugs" movie. aggressive, huge....

This is the nest I killed (with the aid of lots of beer). We sprayed it with waspe killer until they started to pour out then we ran, giggling like little girls, into the house.
You could hear the buzzing from inside the house. I had heard somewhere that they can see you exhale. So I exhaled throught the screen which resulted in the screen being attacked by an uncountable number of them. This again resulted in screams and slamming the door. The next morning I went out to see if the nest was dead. There were 100's of bees dead in the garage and around the screen door in the garage. To my horror most of them were still alive and struggling to wake back up. They were moving!! I had no more spray so I ran around the garage stomping all of them dead. We knocked the next down and ran from it again but it was dormant. Pics:
