Steve [/B][/QUOTE] From what I read, the reason Gibson's remarks about Jews didn't come out right at the time of his arrest is because those remarks weren't included in the police report. Now, some "groups" are saying a police-cover up has occurred. They maintain Mel and the Sheriff are buddy-buddy because he contributes money to the Sheriff's slain officers' family fund. |

As to his old man being a racist (and violent) - who was it that interviewed him about it? Diane Sawyer, I think. And when she asked Mel about it...and persisted...and persisted...and persisted, I thought he was going to haul off and hit her. He looked that upset. |
When I heard the initial story, it just said that Mel Gibson got busted for DUI because apparently he was a little tipsy. Nothing about racial slurs, being drunk as a skunk, etc.
My only point (based on that story) was that I sorta' figured that the "good guy" character Gibson played in the "Lethal Weapon" series might've been a role model or whatever to a lot of these cops out there on the streets now when they were younger. I'm certainly not saying he deserved preferential treatment, only that one would kind of expect a "I think you're too drunk to drive, how 'bout I drive you home" versus a "out of the car and keep your hands where I can see 'em". That's all. In retrospect it sounds like the arresting officer did the right thing - it sounds like Mel was bombed out of his skull. |
It's Hollywood. No press is bad press. He'll continue to make millions whether you like his films or not. He's a producer, director, screenwriter and actor. He's got his hands in a lot of things. No need to feel sorry for the guy and the ones who make fun of him here are just plain jealous of his success.

Ricks ("Leathal Weapon") was a good guy? I remember him as a chain-smoking, beer guzzling, hair trigger vigilante psychopath. Murdoch (Danny Glover's character) was the good guy, IMO.
|
He kicked ass on the bad guys and was usually right. A maverick yea, but still the "good guy". Certainly a lot more exciting as a character than Murdock, hence why he'd have appeal. I dunno - I always thought he was a cool character. . . I could see how he'd make detective work seem glamorous and exciting and enticing in any case. . .

Why is he such a big target, because he financed a movie about Christ? Cmon, the guy's only human. He made a mistake, just as thousands do each day. And the Christ connection just makes him all the more forgiveable.

Ah...those were the days. :p |
he sounds pretty contrite to me. I don't know him but my ex boss does, and she said he is a genuinely nice guy. What was that part about casting the first stone?
And I don't agree with his philosophy...so go figure. Truth is all these guys are screwed up in some way or another. Kinda like politicians...its a combination of the screwed-up being drawn to the career, and the lifestyle further tweaking them. Politics is showbusiness for ugly people. |
Yeah - screwed up is right. Remember Buffy from "A Family Affair." Didn't she swallow a whole drug store before ascending that big sound stage in the sky?

I'm of two minds about this official ADL acceptance of Mel's apology.
In one sense, it's kindhearted to expressly accept someone's apology, even if you temper your acceptance with pointed skepticism. On the whole, however, I'm glad Abe made this statement. The strange part to me is when one specific interest-group purports to speak for all of those whom its membership could but does not include; such as NOW claiming to speak on behalf of all women (a laugher of Olympian proportions). Abe didn't preface the acceptance with "On behalf of the ADL..." or say "We in the ADL will...". And it's not like Mel apologized to the ADL, expecting them to convey his regrets to the rest of the Jews. Presumption, hubris, chutzpah, call it what you will, this aggrandizement as the self-appointed "voice of the [in this case] Jews" never sits right with me. JP |
I'm Jewish and on behalf of all the Jewish people, I can't speak for them.....
Personally, I accept his apology. I do think that he is anti-Jewish (as is a large part of the North American population, I had to leave a job when they 'discovered' that I was Jewish-- I stopped getting invited to lunch, my orders or installs stopped being completed on time, my boss started coming down on me, etc.) but he has acknowledged that what he said is wrong and cannot be tolerated. |
BAC .12 isn't enough to make anyone I know stupid enough to go blathering about "The Jews"TM,... attempt running from the cops, etc...
A little uncouth conversation with a bar skank perhaps |
