Rescue dogs

Ok, ok... I'm sorry to start another dog thread! I was going to post a reply to ROSSINI's thread about dogs, but was afraid it was already turning into a "rescue dog" hijack.

Plus, given the passing of both tabs' and cool-chick's dogs a couple weeks ago, maybe we should honor them with a thread about rescue dogs. (I think they were both from the pound).

So, please post your rescue dog's pics and stories!

We got our guy Chance 3 years ago, he's now 10 or 11 years old. He's a purebred beagle from www.beaglepaws.com.

In certain areas in Newfoundland, they breed beagles just for hunting. At the end of rabbit season, many owners shoot the old ones or leave them tied to trees in the woods. Real classy.

Chance was found wandering around Saint John's, Newfoundland on New Year's Day 2002. He weighed 18lbs, and had frostbite and pressure sores from being stored in either a small cage or box.

He's an old dude, so he's been a bit spendy... much of it dealing with skin damage from frostbite. But he's a happy feller, and knows he has it good now. All he wants in the world is for you to PET HIS HEAD, and maybe a good book to chew on.

He's old, he stinks and he eats his own crap. He's my best bud

I though this would be about dogs that put their lives on the line in the rescue service...

Nope; just more vanity dog photos. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I just had my hopes up.

The one on the right is our dane rescue named Tallulah (I call her Tula). She was a bit of a mess when we got her as she had significant food allergies and the PO/Vets could not figure it out. Long story short, we got her on a raw food diet (as the other dane is on as well) and she is loving life. No allergies, shiny coat, lots of energy, put on some weight.

We spent a couple of years deeply involved in a great dane rescues organization doing home visits, foster parenting, adoptions etc and I loved doing it. But with two dogs and a small child, we have had to put that on hold for now.

The best story I can tell is how I met Tula: My wife and I had spoke about getting a second dog, mostly as I think two dogs are less work than one. My wife was unimpressed with my reasoning and dismissed the idea. "Maybe later" was her response. Well, fast forward a month or so and I returned from a week away at a sailboat regatta to hear our dog barking, which was no surprise. I walked in the house and up the stairs to see my big dog wagging his tail and not making a sound, but there was still barking in the house. Hummmm. I look around him to see Tula. My wifes grin told me that we had just gotten a second dog.

Turns out that my wife had transported Tula to a new set of adoptive parents that decided after a day, Tula was not "dane enough" for them. She went and picked th dog back up and took her home as there was no time to deliver her back to the foster parents that day. After spending some time with Tula, there was no way my wife was going to put Tula back into the adoption system and made the decision to keep her.

This is my 7 month old yellow lab!! We rescued him from a young family that could not afford to take care of him and who didn't know the first thing about animal care. He was kept outside 24 hours a day and developed bad habits. He was starved for attention and appeared to be a little mistreated (by the way he was skiddish and uneasy. He is happy as hell now and couldn't have a better life!!

Unbelievable! Don't you guys have an animal protection agency up there?

Yep, there have been some convictions, but it's pretty hard to track owners down. A lot of these folks are out in the sticks. Many of the dogs are found out in the woods and brought in to the SPCA. Unfortunately, some are also found starved to death, tied to trees in the woods.

They think that Chance had been tied like that, he had sores on his neck... as though he had clawed away at a rope until he freed himself. Took over a year to completely heal.

Vash: That picture of Lady is priceless... you can see how displeased she is with that collar!

Here's a "big sweetie" adopted in D.C. Sort of cross between a German Shepherd and a Persian cat. Loyal, fun lovin' pup:

4 months ago, he was 6.5 pounds when I found him..some $$$ and food=60lbs and growing!

This was Diablo's first day out of the pound. He had been 'home' for a few hours running around and then we couldn't find him. I looked in to our TV room and there he was - chillin' in front of the big screen!

Shortly after the death of our golden, we were looking for a chocolate lab from Lab Rescue in socal. One day we got a call to see a "pure bred choc lab" that was found wandering around a movie set. My wife went, "just to look" and came home with Chip - the "pure bred choc lab":

He had a bad case of mange and by the way he went after food wrappers, he was hungry for much of his time as a pup. We figure he is half choc lab and half bully breed (amstaf, staffie or something) and is the neatest dog ever. Amazing personality.

Go resuce dogs! Especially the mutts!

sounds like the last 4 years we had our beagle. old guy made it to 16yrs.

pissed off the cats every night when he would finish their dinner for them too.

my parents now are on their 2nd Australian Shepard in 3 years.
found a breeder that likes to adopt out ex-show dogs. never seen a better/mellow pair of dogs. keep dad company on his 2 daily walks 1-2hrs each. retirement got him in the best shape in years.

my Aussie doesn't show those traits at all. pure energy 24-7. but at least he stopped eating books after he was 6mo old.

Mine was sort of a rescue although by most of your standard she really is not.

My wife and son came home with her as an addition to our new home. I was not pleased. We have had dogs in my family all my life and I knew the responsibility of owning one. Something they were clueless to. My wife was never allowed pets in her home.

I was not in the mood to take care of a dog. I had a business I was trying to get off the ground and had no time. My family time was already suffering.

She stayed. She was purchased from a (ghack) puppy mill stip mall store. (I went through the ceiling when I found out) I have to admit this dog was lucky to find us. We were financially able to provide for her. $3000 later she was healthy and this was in the first year of ownership. This dog was a mess and had every disease they could catch. She has been a part of our family for 7 years now. I cannot imagine being without her. She seems very healthy and still acts like a pup to this day, but, I notice she is a little slow to her feet in the morning. That males me sad I know the time is not far off where she will pass. While her passing will make me sad, my 2 boys and my wifes broken hearts will be almost unbearable.

I have lost 2 dogs glowing up and they were by far the most heartbreaking moments of my youth. I know this is coming for my boys and it makes me sad when I think about it.

The main reason I did not want a dog.

She loves my new FJ though and is my buddy!!

Sounds like some of the guys I served with while I was in the Marine Corps!

Actually, he sounds like a great friend. Good for you for saving him!
