Motorola RAZR sync w/PC question.
....so I did that "new every 2" thing w/Verizon and got this RAZR V3 phone. I have poured through many sites trying to make sure this can/will do what I want and I still can't figure it out (manual is useless).
Can someone simply confirm that if I buy the "mobile phone tools" CD I will have the driver that will allow my phone and computer to sync so I can create a contact list on computer and occasionally transfer music and pics (via USB)? I don't watch vids, play games etc so I am not sure I need this phone (can return w/in 15 days). Thanks a lot...I simply can't find my answer and am getting ticked. Joe |
Yes. Mobile Phone Tools will allow you to sync your contacts, add picures and even take MP3s from your PC and creat ringtones. It definitely works with the Razr. (Get the right version of PhoneTools)
On a Mac, iSync is part of the operating system ans will sync all contacts. |
No, it won't. Verizon "locks down" features on their Razrs such that Mobile Phone Tools can only be used to synch the contacts and calender. You can't transfer pics and mp3's. Their intent is to force you to use their pay services.
There is a fix. It requires some free software to edit a "seem"- a line of binary code in the firmware - to enable the transfer of pics and music. Excellent step by step directions and software links here: http://www.howardforums.com/showthread.php?t=947130 It looks daunting, but its not. You can create mp3 ringtones with MPT, but there are tricks, at least w/ my copy. Finally, if you buy Mobile phone tools, you may only want to upgrade as far as ver 4.04-not 4.21 ( the most current) as you need to edit another seem to use 4.21 w/ a V3m- if you identify the phone as a V3cm in ver 4.04, it works great. Edit: one source for the usb driver: http://lchelp.org/MOTO/USBMOTO.zip Unfortunately, there's no way to get OBEX back on a V3m without disabling the ability to use mem cards-requires an earlier firmware. Nor is there a hack for games without using the earlier firmware, which basicly makes it a v3c, not an m, not that that may matter to you. You'll also need v3 usb drivers, google for those. |
Wow! I overlooked the fact that he's with Verizon. With Cingular it was a snap.
