Does anyone think power will transfer smoothly to Raul if Fidel dies?

I think it will be a power grab.

The problem (well...one of the many problems) with dictatorships is that they don't generally adequately prepare heirs, leading to a power vacuum when the dictator dies.

Raul is in charge of the armed forces, so unless it'sa Coup, I think it will devolve onto him.

Well that's just great :( My stock of Cubans is running real low and it's either wait out the death watch or take another trip to the Bahamas.

"The imperialists ignore the strength of Fidel Castro," Alarcon said in an interview with the news agency Prensa Latina. Castro will fight fiercely to the end, he said, "but this end is very far away."

I grew up in Miami and one of my fraternity brothers is now a lawyer/mouthpiece for the Mas Canosa's of the world. i used to agree with the Miami Cubans, but after being away for a while and actually going to Cuba, I have come to the conclusion that they are nuts. Their primary practical reason for keeping the embargo going is that when it ends, ANYONE in the US with the resources will be welcomed to come and partner up with the Cuban government and whatever entities it designates to do business in Cuba......EXCEPT for the Miami exiles. My friend and his people actually believe that they can come back on reclaim their land because "nobody owns it now" (his words to me 20 years ago) What i came to realize when I visited there is that nobody "owns" land because it is a Marxist state, but people are sure as hell living on that property and they have NO interest in going back to being peasants on some Miami Cuban exile's plantation. And i won't EVEN get into the whole virulent racism issue, which allegedly no longer exists in Cuba, but you could have fooled me...lol From living in Miami, I thought that Cuba was a predominately white country until the Marielitos showed up in 1980, and even then, I had no idea how few whites there were left down there. (20% of the population....even if you could the 500,000 that fled, it was never more than 25-30%.

I've always thought the Cubans in exile waiting to reclaim their land were nuts.
We should end the embargo now, and get our economic interests into Cuba before he dies.

I used to think that "punishing" Castro with embargo for his seizure of assets owned by people/companies from the U.S. was the right thing to do.

More and more I'm inclined to agree with the two opinions above.

I'm not even sure "embargo" is the correct term. When you block other countries from doing business with Cuba, isn't it a blockade? Or does this term only apply when you literally block the ports, etc?

President Bush Monday approved an $80 million program, aimed at fostering democratic change in Cuba. The U.S. administration is also pledging extensive support for any Cuban government succeeding Fidel Castro's communist regime that promises free elections and an end to repression.

Kinda sad when you think about it... the money from external interests is gonna have a HUGE impact on shaping "what Cubans think is best for themselves"

I am a little suspicious that most of the money will stay in the Miami area.
