Question for chess experts regarding pawn promotion
Strange situation: The black pawn moves to 8th rank and is promoted to queen... this promotion results in white being in checkmate. Is this scenario legal? I need to know if I've beaten my 6 year old daughter did this result in a stalemate?

Checkmate!
The new queen is a queen, simple as that. Randy |
Should be Checkmate .. Stalemate will be when the King has no legal moves to make and is not under attack (check).
But has been many years .... btw. congrats on 'beating' your 6 years old!! |
Yuppers, it is legal. checkmate.

Absolutely legal - and encouraged. If your opponent isn't making defending against pawns past about the 6th rank or so an extremely high priority, he/she deserves to be beaten.

......"The passed Pawn is a criminal, who should be kept under lock and key." from My System by Nimzovich, p. 54 .
(Wouldn't mind seeing a diagram of the final position, if you have/recall it) |

Ballz! said the Queen. "If I had to I'd be King"!
The King smiled, not becuase he wanted to but because he had to! |

Tis thought the king is dead; we will not stay.
The bay-trees in our country are all wither’d And meteors fright the fixed stars of heaven; The pale-faced moon looks bloody on the earth And lean-look’d prophets whisper fearful change; Rich men look sad and ruffians dance and leap, The one in fear to lose what they enjoy, The other to enjoy by rage and war: These signs forerun the death or fall of kings. Farewell: our countrymen are gone and fled, As well assured Richard their king is dead. William Shakespeare (Captain; Richard II, Act 2, Scene 4) |
