The couple from Atlanta (Davis's) who are featured on A&E network are suing because the network has "fired" the whole Trademark Property Team and replaced with two completely new sets of cast members for this season.
Turns out that Richard Davis (Main realtor Guy) did the original concept, wrote, produced the first pilot on his own and owned all the rights subsequent. He had shopped the pilot to several other networks prior with no success until A&E picked it up last year. When the season was close to ending (now) A&E fired the whole team and then went on to blatantly copy their concept with all new players. One team is in Atlanta and the other in Texas. Which ever team has the best ratings ......they win. There are 8 episodes for each team already in the 'can' Davis said his show is the real thing and owns all rights. Interestingly enough Flip-This-Hosue web forums on A&E's website has been completely deleted.

To me they (Davis's) are the real deal. That's what makes the show compelling. At first you'd think his wife didn't have enough sense to pick her nose let alone assist in the transaction but she is definitely an integral part. Very keen eye for 'stagng', color choice and decor.
They have inspired me, in a small part, to pursue my real estate career. As in: flip MY house

That group, (the Davis's), was actually from here in Charleston, SC. Kevin Molony manages the roofing company that is installing the roof on the project we are currently doing. They were all real people in the business. Last I heard they were picked up by another network then I saw the show that features brothers. The one brother sat in a blow up pool in the yard with some massive dog on a chain and said it motivated the workers. Real piece of work he is.

So are they still out of Charleston, SC ??
I know for sure that TLC (The Learning Channel) has picked them up for the next season but the first show won't air until Jan '07

I can add to the topic.
I was in Charleston, SC vacationing the week of July 17th. We were at the beach but went into town to explore etc. one day. We ate dinner at Fleet Landing (my nephew works there) on 7/19 and the whole crew from Trademark was there and were being filmed for their wrap up party from a project they just finished. My wife wanted to meet Richard and after a Long Island Iced Tea went over and introduced herself. He came over and invited us out to their party at the outside bar and we talked for over 15 minutes. Met Ginger and several others. She's a petite thing and hot. Got our picture taken with Richard and Ginger. John and his wife are coming here to Pittsburgh in Sept. to see the Steelers play! Richard said Flip this House was picked up by TLC and that the new season was starting in Nov. or Dec. They were filming while we were talking so who knows...we might even be on an episode. Those new crews on Flip are a joke. Look for them in Nov. or Dec.

They had a Flip marathon on this AM. The South Carolina Company seemed very profesional and showed pride in their work. In saying that I saw the group from Atlanta. Their work was mainly replace drywall and clean up the property and sell. The group from Texas were unreal. They pay their contractors crap, and expect a photographer to take pics for a free plug on their website. The thing that got me was when the contractor was raising the house with general labourers under the house digging out the foundations with zero wall support. These guys will gladly cut corners for greater profit. Unbelieveable!

I watch these shows and others like them and wonder...
For every successful flip, how many turn sour? How many people watch these shows and think "That looks pretty easy", try it and go bust? Just thinking these shows should come with a disclaimer.

I've watched a few of these shows. it seems these people put it all on the line. they are overbudget, out of time, broke and in despair, everything going wrong, etc... but in the last 4 mins of the show, they have the last laugh, they pull it off and walk away with a huge profit, sometimes 100K+...
show is designed to take you on that ride. makes for good television. Last edited by on-ramp; 08-07-2006 at 07:04 PM.. |

Turbo
I spent many years in the real estate business way back (grew up in it, had a license at 16 and held houses open. Couldn't legally sign a contract, though, had to bring it back to the office!!). There were a few lucky individuals I met over the years(read also devoted and hard working) that seemed to have the instinct for a good deal. What I learned from them was "Always leave a little profit for the next guy". Seems reasonable. It is the greed factor that shows its slimy head and clouds otherwise smart people's senses. I cannot tell you how many "deals" over the years I advised against, but some folks get bitten by the bug and will not listen. Thanx for the site. Looks interesting. Should be mandatory reading for every would be "flipper".
