You will never see a story about someone using a firearm to defend themselves or their home and family. That just doesn't get reported.

We actually do get a few, not many, here in Houston.

Hmm, more I think of it, there have been quite a few, four I can think of off hand, and 3 had shots fired. All of these occured in the past year.

Texas is not the wild wild west. Until it passed the Concealed Handgun License law (CHL) in 1995 (response to the shooting in Luby's), Texas had some of the most restrictive gun laws, in some ways, even more so than New York! Only about 1/2 of 1 percent get a CHL. The effect was a significant reduction in crime and no blood baths in the streets.

Unfortunately, Hurricane Katrina moved a lot of the bad elements of New Orleans to Houston and our crime rates have gone up, quite dramatically, for such a small increase in population. Our population increased 100,000 vs. 4 million (2.5%) and our crime rate is up 35%.

I carry everywhere I can. Concealed means concealed. No one else is supposed to know.

check out DILLON RELOADING for some real cool concealed carry holsters. a nice one for walking is the CYA. not good for driving but great for walking. have a host of others. my favorite is the DAYTIMER concealed carry book. perfect for taking to work if your self employed. fanny paks worn in front are a dead giveaway that you are carrying.

buddies and i love it when winter comes. simple to carry. summer will make you think a little bit so you dont "PRINT" ie. let public see you are carrying.

Yes, but only with a BB gun as a stupid teen after being shot first by another stupid teen.

As teens we used to have BB gun fights in my parent's basement. I was shot right in the corner of my eye, nearly a Christmas Story moment. That was one colorful bruise.

Yep, while I was in Desert Storm, rather not go into any details.

I've leveled off and been prepared to shoot several times. First was while out hunting, using a biiig oak as a back rest while overlooking a pit, waiting for the deer to come thru. Some a-hole decided my tree would make a safe backstop for his 22 practice. Rolled over had him in my scope and hollered that there was someone htere. He took off. Second was a drunk angry boyfriend pounding on the wrong apartment door. Answered it wiht my 12 gauge ready.

When I lived in Montana, attending college, I had several Canadian roommates and their friends, who absolutely loved to go shooting because I had access to several handguns and they did not. Lack of handguns in Canada dates back to at least the 1930's laws restricting them and is not due to lack of interest in owning and shooting them. Canada, with the usual exceptions found in their larger cities, is a gun owning culture.

Someone in that thread mentioned something about close confrontations, and it got me thinking, have any of you american gun-owners ever actually used it on someone in a confrontation? Shot them? Used it to threaten someone without actually firing?

Just curious.

edit: let me also add another qualifier: outside the military. I'm talking about everyday life - prowler in the house, bar fight, etc.

Well, considering some 85% of our population lives in cities, to say our rural people are a gun-owning culture isn't really making much of a statement. In all my life, I've never known anyone who owns a gun, with the exception of 2 friends' parents, who were hunters. The only time I've ever even *seen* a handgun is in a cop's holster.

If not, I'll just tee it up as a SOCIAL EXPERIMENT (the shooting that is!):D

It's really too bad to hear that the effete rule Canada, but then according to my friends that are citizens of Canada, that's the case. I suspect that the 85% to which you refer as living in cities, are really living in what we'd call mid-sized towns here, but I really don't know. I knew many in Canada who owned rifles and shotguns, and came to Montana to shoot handguns which fortunately are still legal here.

Oh, I'd never kill anyone. Well, not unless they really pissed me off.

What kind of guns do your criminals have?... Stolen hunting rifles?

As a side note:
Firearms are multipurposed and can be used for non-game target shooting too.
It doesn't really matter what the original design intent was. Just like the Porsche.

Never have I had to bring a weapon to bear against another person. I hope I will never have to.

But I WILL kill to defend myself and my loved ones.

Back in my GA Tech days, I was walking back to my apartment in downtown Atlanta and found a group of three street trolls trailing me one night. I always carried a Colt .45 when strolling the back streets to the Piedmont Park area(not a very good place). Anyhoo, they moved in closer and told me they needed to go through my pockets. My back was to them as I continued to walk and unlimbered the 1911(locked and cocked of course), snicked off the safety, held it out to the side in plain view and turned. All three were already half a block away and accelerating. Man those bozos were quick!! I never even heard their footsteps. Glad I didn't have to perforate anyone. Just the ability to defend oneself with deadly force if necessary is usually sufficient deterrent.

Got into a road rage/ pissing match with some guy having a bad day in New Orleans traffic. I made a lane change and didn't see this guy in my blind spot. Sorry, my bad. He pulls up beside me and starts the screaming motherfu**er routine. I thought about it a moment and decided to give him the finger. Wrong decision. He leans down and comes up with a S&W mod. 59, 9mm(I was close enough to identify the piece) and begins waving it in my direction while continuing to question my heritage. Myself and all the traffic around me immediately hit the brakes leaving the madman out front still screeching and waving the gat. Jeez, what a nut. In the future I guess I'll keep my finger to myself.

I'm 100% pro-gun but there are certainly people out there that shouldn't have one. Guns do have the potential for overreaction, excessive force and terrible accidents when in the hands of idiots. Training and common sense are a must.

3 things that would make this world safer................

1) be licensed and schooled in operating a BOAT!

2) make drivers licenses dependent on actual driving tests involving freeway driving and accident avoidance.

3) all gun owners should be by law, tested at gun range, be it concealed or not.

Considering there are only 4 cities in Canada over a million people, yes, most people classified as "urban" would live in mid-sized cities with a population between 50K and 500K (I'd guess most would be in the 200-500K range). However they're still not "rural" in any sense.

I don't think it's a case of the country being run by sissies - relaxing gun laws is not an issue in Canada. I'm sure there are some people who would like to see less restrictions, but the vast majority of people (by my own estimation) don't give it a second thought. It's never come up in political elections (at least not as long as I've been alive), you never hear or see lobby groups or demonstrations, or anything like that. It's just a non-issue. We have gun control, and very few people seem to mind (or perhaps they just don't care). Now, if it were enshrined in our constitution then taken away (or restricted) I could see people getting upset.

At the risk of opening up a huge can of worms, I would guess that most people in Canada look at violent crime rates in the US vs. Canada and point to our gun control as the reason why it's so much lower in Canada. I'm not necessarily saying I agree or disagree (I'm sure there are a TON of other factors in there, nothing is ever that clear cut), but I think that's a pretty common attitude here.

edit: had to fix spelling - I typed "fun control" instead of "gun control" lol :D
