A fool and his money are soon parted

While surfing the Internet, I came across this auction for a 1978 930 and the bid was at $22K. Two days later, it was the winning bid.🙄

I copied and searched the VIN and brought up a add in Hemmings and it was for sale at $200K.

Same pictures and description. A search of the auction website had some good and bad reviews.

Like the title says, a fool and his money are soon parted.

I don't understand what happened here.

Did someone send someone else $22K through an invalid auction - and thus lose his money?

Or was the auction a fake - period. No money exchanged?

And lastly - is the Hemmings ad legit? And if so, is the car still for sale, despite the other auction site?

Or did someone score a bargain because there was no reserve and hardly anyone else knew there was an auction running.

More importantly, isn’t the saying “a fool and his money are soon parted?” or is there an inside joke I’m missing?

Scam.

I've run into that site several times before except under different names.

Format is identical, layout, presentation, bunch of high dollar desirable cars that "sold" for a fraction of true market value.

And yes, you can almost always find their inventory on other reputable / legitimate / known sites.

You are correct, but I couldn’t change it. Voice to text is not guaranteed.

I worked on a ranch very near there in 1975 and have driven through a few times since then. It was (still is?) a ranch town. Very far from everywhere. They used to have an airport maybe they still do. If I had to bet - I'd say it would be on the list of least likely to have owners of older Porsches. Ford F150s yes - Porsches no. Maybe the town has completely changed?

Just assume most ads are scams. They are.

Facebook is the worst, I keep reporting them, and they don't take down the ads.

Yup, sadly it is just too easy to scam folks on the internet.

BTW: technically, the expressed is
'A fool and his money are soon parted.'

There was an operation that was active two years ago, kept changing web domain and dealer name, but cheaped out on the same shots of their "dealership" on each new setup.

One tell something is off is that a car is too nice for the model year.
If I'm browsing a 2009 Jaaaag it shouldn't look like it has the aging as if it had been a 2022.

You mean the FB ads for $5,000 items that COSTCO or Home Depot have overstock on that they need to purge so you can buy it for $79.99 which is less than the item would cost to ship and COSTCO are so stupid they would rather lose even more money?

Yeah I report those as well, was reporting them several times a day for like a month.

I don't see them anymore but I don't attribute that to FB actually doing anything about it rather that their AI finally figured out it should stop showing them to me.

I have a few relatively rare Marshall amps listed on FB Marketplace. I have gotten replies from two women saying they would take them, asked for my cell #. No questions, no bargaining, just wanted my cell #. Yeah, lots of women are out there looking for obscure Marshall amps for their husbands.

I keep getting an ad on Facebook about 3lbs of Alaskan King Crab legs for $19.99 and free shipping from a place called judylockeclub. I checked out the site and they "sell" everything you could ever imagine.

Here is an example:

When I click on the person's name, they are advertising the same tractor 40+ times across the country.

I see this all the time.
