Property taxes kicking my butt

I just received my township property tax bill for 2006/2007. It increased by 20%!! OK I "only" pay a little over $4200 per year BUT I live in a 900 square foot house with no garage no basement, I have my own well, septic and bottled LP for cooking.

Over $2K goes to the schools, we have a volunteer fire department, a small police dept. WTF?!!!!

jersey is killin' me.

Yikes. I have a 2750 sq ft house on a half acre lot and I'm paying about $600/year, IIRC. But then again, I have to live in Alabama. There is a trade off.

Good old public pensions and lifetime healthcare. Services are dropping as taxes are going up all over the country.

Unlike GM, Ford and the airlines - your local government is not going to file chapter 11. Just raise your taxes.

This state is a nitemare. And to think I moved from NYC because houses were cheaper

Another reason to love California! Folks on my block are paying anywhere from $3,000 to $12,000 per year, depending on when they bought their home. I'm paying $6,300. I have the peace of mind knowing that as long as I don't sell, my property taxes will only increase a max of 2% per year.

$4200 for a 900 sq ft house in NJ??? Ouch!!! I feel for you.

Motion? Every year after you pay your property taxes, you should have flowers delivered to the graves of Howard Jarvis and Paul Gann....If it weren't for the efforts of these two brave men and a lot of volunteers, you'd be as screwed as the folks in New Jersey...

$1500 county/city taxes for 1800 sq/ft on .25 acres

That is after a 19% boost in tax rate last year and a 23% boost in tax value the year before

Poroposition 13 is a very good thing, it limits how much property taxes in Ca can go up per year. We need to protect it to make sure it doesn't go away. Seems like every time we turn around some democrats are trying to repeal it so they can afford to spend more money on people or projects that don't deserve it.

My property is valued at somewhere in the $750k range but I only pay around $2400 a year in property taxes
That's mostly why we haven't upgraded to a bigger house, I wouldn't be able to afford $12k a year in property taxes on top of the house payment.

Well, it's nice to see a little more parity between US and CDN taxes for a change!! We're so used to seeing you guys pay half (or less) what we do in income taxes, sales taxes, etc. We pay about $3800/year on a 2100 sq. ft. house, fully urban area, nice clean safe (and boring!) suburb where cracks in the sidewalk get fixed fast, about 45 min. outside downtown Toronto. I don't feel so raped now!

Property tax is the main reason I will not move. I'm paying property tax based on when my in-laws bought this house back in 1977.

In Florida?

1500sf house on 1/4 acre
Taxes $3800 a year and $3400 a year to insure it.

In North Carolina

1600sf house on 1 acre
Taxes $400 a year and another $400 to insure it.

Why am I still living in Florida again?

Fla = No income tax
NC = Income tax and a pretty high one at that

I spoke with a business owner in Alabama last month.
He has well over 25 acres, pays ~$600/yr. in prop. taxes.
.
Isn't NJ one of the leading states in the US (percentage wise) for illegal alien invasion?
Out here in Kalifornia, they side-step increased prop. taxes by passing school bond measures.
Gee, I wonder why they need so much money.
I phoned a local school district finance officer 4 yrs. ago about this - she called them "...our new Americans."
My prop. taxes have increased 80% in the past 9 years due to SBM's.
I now pay $6k/yr.
.
What do these home buyers do for a living in order to afford $1,200 - $1,700/mo. in prop. taxes?

My wife & I were paying $867 on a two bedroom house in So Cal before Prop 13. After Prop 13, it went down below $450. I remember the politicians moaning that public services would suffer or become nonexistent and schools would close. Nothing changed & politicians continued to skim money off for their pet projects. Now people are paying mostly $600 to over $1,000 a month (for reasonably recent purchases) for property taxes. Still nothing has changed.

I guess thats why we are having a mad exodus from the state. Funny thing is, as fast as they move out, someone takes their place.
Why would anyone in their right mind want to move here anymore??

Yes, , but you guys got it better than one of my clients was paying $18K a year in property taxes when he bought the restaurant 9 years ago. This is a little beach bar & restaurant, so the food, while very good is very reasonably priced, so are the drinks and it is not even directly on the beach. This year, he paid $89,000 in property taxes, yes, $89K just in taxes, add the payroll taxes which, even though restaurant workers who work for tips, get payed less, because the tips bring their income up, if they are good, well above MW, but the government taxes the owner on the MW, and expects the servers/bartenders to pay taxes on the tips (can we say double dipping here) his employee taxes went up over $60K. This has been a beaches instituting for decades, good food, good prices, nothing upscale, a place to stop and feed the family while at the beach. How is a business owner to keep a business open selling $2 beers & $5 burgers while paying $149,000 in taxes before any of the other cost of operating. If he raises the cost to meet what the government is seizing from him, he will price many long time customers out of the there. So while the liberal are crying that the MW needs to be raised to so people too stupid to work hard enough to earn a decent wage, they force those who do give workers a starting point out of business, them cry about high unemployment.
