scottmandue, don't know how a cat let alone a child could get into the antpro feeder, it really works...out of sight and out of mind. They come with stacks that can be removed so they stay put in the dirt. We have a dog, no problem and plenty of cats running around the area. The feeder will do fine in the rain, can't get in, it is a perfect shape and the ants love the food inside it :mad:

I had terrible black ant problems for years. The Terro products work the best for me. http://www.terro.com/ The spray turned out to work the best. After years of baiting, etc, I sprayed the baseboards a couple of times with the spray and it got rid of them for good (at least inside).
I tried the baits and they work better than any other baits, but did not do the job of keeping them out of my house. Tip: Disregard directions and never bait inside your house or very close. You willl attract every ant in creation. Put it ouside and they will find it. At least attract them away from your house.

For Fire Ants....Amdro baits work well IMHO.

I spray "Home Defense" around the perimeter of the house once a week and no ants at all this summer...

Why are we out to kill all the ants? They are part of the ecosystem on our tiny plant.

Chalk. We pick up these little white anti-ant sticks in Chinese supermarkets. Draw a line, and ants won't cross over it. Interesting to find an ant, draw a circle around it, and watch it bop back and forth for awhile. I don't know what's in this stuff (if it's just regular blackboard chalk, or what), but it works. Maybe it won't eradicate the buggers, but it's good at at least sealing the ants outside of the home, or from around the dog dish. And it's nontoxic enough that I don't worry about using it around pets or kids.

I just tell my uncles to leave them at home...

Malathion is good on mosquitos and certain agricultural insects. Although labelled for ant control, there are much better product out there.

For an over-the-counter solution against fire ants, I have tried AMDRO, Over'n Out and Once and Done. For me, the Once and Done worked best.

If your ants are not fire ants, then there are other product which may also give good results.

I find the best solution is to locate their nest or hole in the ground where they go to and take a rod and drive it down to make a large opening. Next pour gasoline down the hole. Once you have done that, seal the hole. That's the end of them for sure.

I use Amdro. It is carried into the ant hill and fed to the queen who dies. It's not permanent, but is pretty effective. You sprinkle it on the ground all around your house and around any hill you see.
