i figured i imagined it...

i had not seen one of these vermen in many a summer, infact i thought they may have been the figment of a boys imagination. that was until my tomatos plants were not doing what they should be. oh, plenty of fruit, but it was like sun scortched, some eatin and just not up to spec. the better boy strain was doing pretty good, but the early girl, who had been all but early this year was showing fatique. i looked a bit closer and found this beast.

look at the size of that futcher! even had to go get one of the striped ones from the game room to give a good scale, a penny did NO justice. i know you folks from the red states have infestations of all sorts, but we here on the west coast spray from helicopters to kill our unwelcome flies that might taint our fruit, or elderly. we are not accustom, you will say what about locust and rat poo that makes deadly dust, but for us in the burbs, this is a crisis..

That looks like a mutated multi-legged Shar Pei.

UPDATE!

i had forgotten to quell the disturbance completely by killing the beast after the photo shoot. just now returning to the thread i remembered that fact and panic ed. i ran out back to find just this left... notice it DID not take the 10 of stripes, but did leave a dump.

i suspect he figured he needed to travel light so he unloaded and got on his way. i should have repaired those ripped screens this spring, again helicopters take care of our vermin and i saw no need.

Folks in Africa and South America would put that thing in their salad!

juanbenae 08-21-2006 06:26 AM

Crap! When that thing turns into a moth it will be the size of gull. A whole days work to wipe it of the wind shield.

Hehe Nice pic Toby! Next time just pick that sucker up and fling into a wall. They make a nice green splat like a paint ball...but bigger. :D

I'd put that thing on the grill with some BBQ sauce and eat it!!

I get these suckers almost every year. That is a really big one. I just watch my plants, and if I see whole branches denuded of leaves then I know I have them. If you let them get out of control they will eat an entire plant before you know it. I get rid of them by just picking them off the plant, and killing them. They blend in so you have to look very carefully. Look for small holes and/or discolloration on the fruit. Smaller worms will eat the fruit from the inside out. Anyone who has kids has probably read "The Very Hungry Caterpiller". I think that book must have been written about the the tomato hornworm.

Where's your nearest black widow spider to feed it to?

Nature can take care of itself just fine - you'd just need to provide the "introduction".
