Gitanes

http://img226.imageshack.us/img226/1...gitanesaa5.jpg

I saw these old advertisements for Gitanes cigarettes. They brought back happy memories of when I smoked them. I think I'd still be smoking them now if my mother-in-law hadn't persuaded me to swithch to something a little more feminine. They're short, fat and smell awful to non Gitanes smokers, nothing is a better smoke than a Gitane from a freshly opened packet. I have this incredible longing for them right now. And I am definitely going to give in to it when I'm in France next week!

They also did a run of advertisements with attractive, leftbank, Serge Gainsbourg type men smoking them in the mid 70s that melted my schoolgirl knickers

As it's Pelican - a little Porsche content

Anyone else having some nostalgia for the brands of a misspent youth?

Once in a while I'll buy a pack of Sherman's Havana Ovals. I don't even inhale, so I guess I'm wasting them.

Bidies from India are pretty cool, the unflavored ones in the pink package.

Granny smoked those little cigars and washed it down with wild turkey. They don't make dames like that anymore...

Almost Proustian...

They definitely had their own acrid smell from the dark tobacco I can recall decades later. Same for Gauloise.

For whatever reason, whenever I see a box I still associate them with late '70's Ligiers and Jacques Lafitte...

Yes, but now I realize that it is all part of the brainwashing from the cigarette manufacturers. There is nothing about them that makes you sexier, better looking, a more skilled driver, etc. They will either kill you young, or cause you to linger into old age tied to an oxygen bottle with emphasema. Period.

Lung cancer, Emphysema, COPD, etc..., are not attractive! Quit while you can!! Sorry, my grandfather just died from the effects of cigarette smoking and I'm still very sensitive about this subject!

How does one pronounce "Gitanes". I've never known... I can correctly pronounce "Ligier", though. :>)

prnounce the G from Gitanes , same as the G from ligier
same for the first i
the a is short, and not bright or loud
same for the "es"

not sure if the S is spoken at all , in flemish dialect it would be
but that's a dutch dialect with french influence, so not sure if that applies in real french

can't write fonetically , so i hope the above makes sense to you

+1
I saw my Dad take his last breath because of smoking. The good thing is that he never knew he had cancer. I just don't understand how people can still smoke when we know all about these effects. Yes, I used to smoke but my wife and I both quit when we decided to have kids. Seeing someone you love firsthand suffer from this really opens your eyes.:(

In Europe, smoking is an art and pasttime. In America, it's an invitation to a guilt trip.

On a somewhat related note, the Tom and Jerry cartoons were banned in the U.K. this week because a couple of cartoon shorts had cigarette smoking in them.

Ridiculous.

Oh Haha 08-22-2006 05:13 PM

I agree on the cartoons. How stupid. It is part of worldy culture, especially in past decades.
I still crave a smoke now and again, I can't lie. I know, however, that if I try one I may start up again. I can't do that.

Exactly. I stopped smoking after college years ago, but still have the occasional, though never acted upon again, desire.

But, as I've fortunately learned here, apparently smoking is bad for you. Who knew?

it's changing , although you won't get the preaching folks passing by here like you get in the US , it's definately not as socially acceptable anymore, regulation is clamping down everywhere

Ireland allready has a ban in restaurants, Belgium 1st of januari, UK is going to, etc etc

i actually quit almost 3 months ago, and i ain't going back
i can actually smell it now 20 feet away if there's a smoker upwind, it's just nasty
and at the same time, i can actually taste the cantine food @ work... it's also nasty...

Milu 08-23-2006 12:42 AM

In Italy smoking is banned in bars and restaurants. People go to smoke just outside the door.
