Old Photos you didn't take thread.
Was going through some old family photos from my fathers side and thought I'd share. Maybe a thread will start ?
My Grandfather had a Plumbing and Heating business in Freeport Illinois and took a few on the job photos, etc. The new ? old truck was pretty cool, although I'm not sure who made it ?. I'd love to have it today. My Dad (RIP) is peering over the hood, and Granddad Ling is 2nd from the right on the sidewalk. They may have plumbed the building in the rear of the shot, but I'm not sure. I've never been to Illinois and wonder if this building is still there ? :) edit: Sorry about the size being off, i'll have to resize the photo. |
the plumbing industry has come a long way since 1985
So have phone numbers :D
out of curiosity, How did one dial the old prefixes?
I'm not positive, but you either dial the letters, in this case "Main" or you might have gotten a live operator to direct your call. Can you imagine that ?
You dailed MA or 62-1985
sure would like to have the truck!
In the 1950s around here you tell the operator "Long Beach xxxx".
If anybody sees Godfather or St Valantines Day Massacre look for a hood asking the operator "Long Beach xxxx"....... lol |
Not to hyjack but...
I remember waiting for a neighbor to get of their phone before I could make a call at my grandmothers house. I was told it was not polite to listen in on others calls. Was that a party line?
It sure was a party line. We had one at our house when I was a kid and I'm not that old!

I did a little research on the net and came up with what I think the building in the rear of my old photo is. It looked like it might be a courthouse to me.
Here's a pic or postcard of the old Freeport courthouse that I think is the same building in the photo. If you look close, the stairs match, trees, and several other features. The monument on it's corner was erected for the Civil War Soldiers and still stands as you can see it in the new building picture. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1156727417.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1156727472.gif Now that's progress. |
