Jiffy Lube
I know a few guys that have worked there in the past (while in HS) and this is a very common thing. All the more reason to change your own fluids and do as much of the work yourself.
even though I work for the corporation that owns jiffy rube, i can say that they suck bigtime.
I went with my Dad to his local Jiffy Lube one day a couple of years ago. As we lined up behind another car being serviced in their express oil change line, my Dad was talking about how they check and fill differentials, radiators, etc. and how great that service was because he didn't feel like getting under the car any more. It even listed all of the things they check on their sign above the entrance to the bay. Being skeptical, I said, "well, let's just sit here and see if they check the differential fluid on the truck in front of us" (the rear differential was clearly visible).
They never touched it. He never went back. Mike |
Ohh...and Express Oil Change isn't much better. I've seen them (with my own eyes) charge people for an oil and filter change and never change the oil filter... Sad, really.

Love the license plate on the Jeep! Someone had a sense of humor.

Call me a heathen, but I've actually taken my SC and my 930 to two different quicklube places - not JiffyLube though. I brought my own oil filter (Mahle). I went into the pit, showed them where the drain plugs are, and basically stood and watched EVERYTHING they touched. I had to laugh too when I explained to the guy that LOTS of oil will come out of the oil tank when the plug is undone and he just brushed my comment aside and quickly proceeded to scald his hand and most of his arm with 200F Mobil 1!!
Other than that they do fine with an oil change, they stock Mobil 1, is quick, and the price is good. Kirk |
What is the incentive to not do the repairs? If you are getting a reciept, its not like they can pocket the cash. Or do they get a percentage of sales and are trying to increase the volume. Is the thief just lazy.
I'd say just lazy...
not a big surprise at all...
But as criminal as those guys are, I still wanted to punch that smug investigative journalist! :D |

I've been bringing my Chevy Tahoe to Jiffy Lube for years. Not any more.
I would never take my cars anywhere that I couldn't stand right alongside the car while the monkeys are "working" on it.
My '95 Dodge Dakota died about 2 weeks ago: The engine blew at 134,000 miles. A mechanic friend of mine checked the engine to see if it was salvageable, and also checked the tranny fluid. It was the worst tranny fluid he'd ever seen. That's funny, I said, I get it changed at Oil Changers fairly regularly. No, he said, it's never been changed.
I guess if I can handle 12 quarts of waste oil when I servive my P-car, I can handle a lot less oil on the other cars. The Dodge is history, the Tristar is the new truck. |
Following along your line, Art. When one of your customers arrives at your business, calls you a "monkey" and wants to be beside you while you work, there would be no problem?
I would never deal with any business that I had doubts about. I like oil change shops, we make money out of repairing the damage they cause. Still dealing with a law suit from 2001 regarding engine damage caused at an oil change shop. We had to rebuild the engine. |
Unfortunately, you're never sure of the quality/ethics of the person ("monkey" is a shortened version of "grease monkey") doing the work on your car at these shops. I've never trusted them and insist on standing next to the car, watching them as they work. Some are good, but they are few and far between and if they were good, certainly would move onto a better place of employment than an oil change shop...
I go to Juffy Lube because they are literally around the corner from my apt. Great because I can walk down and dump the oil from the p-car. But I let them do the Subie (before 9am it is $20 for oil/filter). I don't let them do anything else to the car, and watch while they do the work. The last time I went the guy came up and started selling me on an automatic transmission service. I said, "gee, that would be a nice trick seeing that I have a manual...you gonna put a new tranny in?"
How many times a year do you have the oil changed?
Calling someone a Grease monkey is insulting.
