Jake, that looks phenomenal! Congrats - must feel great to see it all completed and looking so good. I've done a few projects in our house since we bought it 2 1/2 years ago, but much like my projects on the 911, half of them require a pro to finish it properly.

Tell you what, if I'm out your way in the P-car, you can take it for a drive if you give me a tour of your house!

I just reread the thread, quite a rambling and roundabout project description, but hey… I was excited and everyone else was asleep. I really do appreciate the comments, I take great pride in my home. We could very easily flip it for 150% of what we have in it, but I love this place. I will never sell, unless forced by misfortune.

Anyway, when I got up this morning I ran down the stairs like a kid on Christmas morning. The floors look really, really nice. I'm glad I went with the satin finish… really suits the wood. I'll post pics tonight.

Christian, anytime you're in the area I'd be glad to take you up on your offer. You wouldn't happen to have family in the area, would you? When we looked at the 450SL last night, the seller mentioned he had a son in Hamilton who owned a 911. Small world, perhaps?

Azasadny, it does feel great! However, I have to admit I'm quite tired and a bit hungover. Ah well, I was excited to see the job done.

IROC, you are right… no one else has floors like these. I always liked the look of wide pine floors in older homes, but I knew pine just wouldn't hold up for us. We have two dogs that are penned into the kitchen all day while we're at work, and the kitchen is truly the hub of our home. These planks are rock maple; with a name like that I can only assume it's as tough as Chuck Norris. They should hold up well, but I'm also comfortable with the idea of them "wearing in" with a bit of patina.

Excellent, excellent, excellent!!!! I love that floor, and I love to see homeowners that are sensitive to the history and character of their homes! Fantastic job!

Thanks! We try to be mindful of the house's history, but it's been through enough renovation "cycles" that it is truly a mishmash. In some ways we benefit from that; we don't feel beholden to a particular style or era. I am very fond of craftsman era homes, and will probably do the trim in that style. In fact, a while back Speeder sent me some pics of a home he was working on, and I will probably mimic the trim in that house. Thanks again, Speeder!

Side note: I find it very odd that I get more useful advice, feedback and encouragement on this forum than I am able to find on the This Old House site. Their forum are very primitive, and as such pretty much unused. Seems like a real mistake on their part. This Old House magazine has been a great resource, even their website is pretty good, but they are really dropping the ball with their forums. You'd think I'd be able to post something like this there, but no.

That is freaking awesome, I wish I had the skills to do what you have accomplished. Of course I can't show my wife these pictures as I have already been informed that our next house will have hardwoods. Showing her these might push her over the edge. That is great, good job.

Ha! You guys give me too much credit. The true craftsmen were the guys who milled the wood for me. The planks were all 10-14 feet long, and there was no gap whatsever along the length. Very impressive!

Side note:

About 2 months ago, someone crashed an ultralight airplane in the river, just 5 minutes from my house. Turns out it was the the one-legged, googly-eyed pirate I bought the wood from. He fled the scene, cuz he was drunk.

Pirates should stay on the water where they belong -- I feel he he must have sensed that somehow

Actually the ultralight was on floats. He just had difficulty landing, because he couldn't see past the tip of his nose.

Good to have around though, helps with global warming.
