The War on Terror
The Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld triumvirate have declared we are in a titanic struggle for our very existence. That Osama Bin Laden is Adolph Hitler (or Stalin) reincarnate and the Islamic Jihadists, Al Quida, etc. are now the Islamofascists? and anyone who disagrees is appeasing the enemy if not out and out abetting them.
President Bush constantly reminds us of the War on Terror and how he is a War President and this struggle against the axis of evil will last many years beyond his presidency? After giving it considerable thought, I realized WTF, I’m not at war with anybody?. The only people actually involved in the War on Terror seem to be the military and their immediate families. The rest of us are just supposed to go on with life as usual and keep spending as much money as possible to keep the economy going. Oh yeah, and put a “Support our Troops” sign on your SUV. I certainly agree that Islamic terrorist organizations are a very real threat and must be terminated with extreme prejudice wherever they are found. I think the real problem with the War on Terror is we are just half-assed fighting it. We don’t have enough boots on the ground in Afghanistan or in Iraq and we certainly don’t have enough to take on Iran, much less North Korea. I believe every American must be given the opportunity to participate in this War on Terror in one way or another, we must mobilize: 1. Bring back the draft. Everyone 18-26 must register. Males and females. No exceptions, exemptions or deferments. In January everyone will receive a lottery number. If your number is called during the year you will report to a military or other designated facility for a physical (no sympathetic family doctors to swear you have back or neck problems). If you pass, you will be given the option of which service to join based on each services needs. If you fail the physical, you will be able to serve your country in alternative service for 2 years. If your number is not called this year, you will receive a new number in January and once again be exposed to the draft. You will be exposed to the draft for 5 consecutive years or the war on terror is won. Also, local draft boards will no longer be needed, that is they can no longer give preferential treatment to jocks, politicians kids and other privileged characters. 2. We must pay for this War on Terror. Currently we are just charging it on that great Master Card in the sky (the national debt). In order to not complicate the Federal Income tax mess any more that it already is, when you do your taxes next year just tack on a 10% surcharge on the amount you owe to help fund the war. After all, you don’t want this near Trillion dollar debt to be passed on to your grand-kids do you? If that isn’t enough, we will look at increasing your contribution in future years. So what you think? Will this fly in middle America when Josh or Allison graduate from high school and instead of deciding State U. or State Tech or Ivyhall, their choice is Army, Marines, Navy, etc. Instead of worrying about pre-med or pre-law or where they will be going on spring break, they can pick from armor, artillery or maybe infantry or maybe Iraq or Afghanistan? Who knows, maybe Country Joe will make a comeback with the Iraqi Rag?

I really don't understand why people keep calling for a draft and "more boots on the ground" in Iraq. Do you guys really think you know more how to fight this...or any war...than the Generals in charge? We currently have no problems killing any bad guy we want in Iraq or Afghanistan...our problem is identifying which ones are the bad guys since they wear civilian clothes and hide among women and children whose safety we are much more concerned with than their own men are. If we increase the boots on the ground...all we do is provide the terrorist more and denser targets (which is exactly what suicide bombers want) so the body count would probably go up.
I also cannot imagine how a draft would somehow increase support for the war. It seems intuitive that it would do exactly the opposite...as would throwing more money at the situation and ruining the economy would. These are the same ideas that are being pushed by the Democratic leadership that wanted to go to war before they were anti-war. I guess that is why liberals cannot seem to get elected. Their ideas seem more geared to losing the war and ruining the economy than doing anything positive. They would rather hurt the nation than allow a conservative lead the country successfully.

74-911,
I'll give you credit, at least you didn't cut and paste to establish your position. This subject has been run through the mill on numerous occasions. Both sides have declared victory and the war goes on so don't waste your time trying to plow new ground. Next....... |
