My girlfriend just bought a phone off of Ebay and is real happy with it. You have to be careful to make sure that the phone you buy will be compatable with whatever network you're on, but they usually will say that in the description. If you're on a GPRS network, the phone has to be unlocked. I don't know if the same is true for an Alltel (CDMA?) phone.

Thanks Bryan! Do you happen to know the user she bought it from on ebay?

I've had good luck buying new in box phones on craigslist, where they are local and you can just go and pick them up.

Ebay is fine as long as you follow all of the usual rules/precautions of shopping there, ie. feedback scores, make sure that you are buying the right item, etc..

I've bought a cheapo Nokia for $22 once from a private seller that changed carriers, and I bought my wife a new unused Treo 650 that had been unlocked. No problem with either, but I guess it's a crap shoot anytime you buy from ebay.

Tom,

I have purchased loads of phone off of Ebay. Only got screwed once and AmEx/PayPal took care of it.

That said, you can get most phones unlocked for about $30 so buy the phone you want and get it unlocked. If you need a source for this let me know.
