Gift etiquette?

My wifes family is good at this and it irks me and I spoke out tonight and I think I pissed my wife off but I do not care.

My wifes 1st cousin is getting married. They are having an engagement party. They are registered at Bed, Bath and Beyond and also at Target. Her cousin and his fiance are not fancy people and they are really down to earth. He is a really good kid and is a motorhead, I like them a lot.

My wife and mother in law decided to go half on a $100 flatwear set. I was pretty pissed telling my wife we can afford $100 and I think its cheesy to go halves. Then she informs me her sister went in on it too. I blew a rod.

I told her to go to one of the stores and buy something in the $100-$200 range or I will do it.

I feel like 3 preople going in on a $100 gift is tacky as hell, am I wrong? Do I owe my wife an apology?

Yeah, you do! That is if you want to keep your own flatware from being stabbed into your back.

Yep, you're good. Spank her for being a bad girl and then make her make it up to you.

Going in 1/2's for a great gift is cool. Unless you are unemployed or a college student, splitting a $100 gift in 1/3's is cheap.

I don't disagree with the comments above.

But do you realize that you are not only insulting your wife, but her mother and sister to boot?

You're playing with fire dude. And what's the upside?

Sneak the kid something car-related and let the girls do their thing.

If you were mean, or rude to her, then appologize.

But you are certainly in the right regarding the gift. No one likes a cheapskate.

Screw it. Take the $66 you are saving by splitting the gift, and use it for gas, & go for a ride!!!

"They are having an engagement party. "

it's a low key female thing afaik.

They know the routine. Guys only have to worry about not screwing up their various cermonies and say correctly in the right tone "I do" etc.

Isn't that more commonly known as a wedding shower?
So what's the plan for the 'wedding' gift?

I feel going 1/3 on a $100 dollar gift is totally cheezy.

I will get him a car related gift but I still think my wife needs to get a gift from US and not 1/2 her family.

There is also a huge chance her other sister and brother will ge ttheir names added to the card because they will not bother to do anything for theit cousin and her mom will feel she needs to cover up for them.

I really do not care if I insult anyone besides her cousin. I think going 3 to 5 ways on a $100 gift is insulting.

You're probably right about the cheapness of that gift arrangement, but it's your wife's family. I'd leave that judgement to them, and expect more say-so when your own family is involved. Suggesting something otherwise is appropriate; but go with the flow. It sounds like your wife deserves an apology.

You're playing with fire Dude. Gifts are the Wife's domain. Just be glad she didn't drag your a$$ down to Bed, Bath and Beyond...

Write the check, move on. Be thankful you don't have to actually go to the shower.

Those things are basically a 3 hour douche commercial.

Wife saw it my way, she is not even mad at me. We bought them a knife set they had on the registery at Target it was about $70. Like I said they do not have expensive taste their registery list was very modest and not over the top like some spoiled brats. This is why I was upset with the shared gift.

The whole family is invited, this is an Italian family we always look for an excuse to get together, drink a lot, and eat lots of pasta. Her family is a lot of fun to be around I am actually looking foward to getting together with them and meeting the fiances family as well, I hope they can hang.
