Has "Surviver" gone too far this time?

Seems like the idea of forming tribes according to ethnicity isn't going over too well with the sponsors. GM was the first to opt out and now several other big names are bailing.

It'll probably get great ratings if enough sponsors stay in. I'm thinking the NAACP should get in on this.

RickM 09-12-2006 09:27 AM

At first they were selling in this market as the battle of the races. That was quickly changed.

Porsche-O-Phile 09-12-2006 09:38 AM

Bottom feeding from television networks via the conduit of so-called "reality television"?

Perish the thought.

I could care less if they televise a KKK rally - I still ain't watching either way. TV sucks.

Surviver is still on the air?!

I think I saw five minutes of one episode. Guess we're obvious examples (victims) of their "twist" catching our attention.

I want to see the Suuni's vs. the Kurds. Or the Bloods vs. the Crips. Or the KKK vs. the Black Panthers. Endless possibilities. Give me something!

What's Survivor? And somone please explain what "TV show" means...

In all seriousness, here's my take on the current crap, er, I mean crop of TV shows: While America is hypnotized by "REALITY TV" the quality of acting is surely going down and down and down in all of Hollywood. Why? Back a few years ago, before all this "Who Wants to Marry an American Idol Millionaire's Survivor" Reality TV, producers for TV shows actually had to go out there and find honest-to-goodness actors to play roles in honest-to- goodness TV shows.

Now that TV has dropped to the lowest common denominator in reality shows, it simply doesn't pay to be a good actor in Hollywood anymore. It used to be that actors & actresses would work their way up - TV ads, extras in TV shows, recurring roles, side characters, main characters in TV shows, and then on to movies - extras, recurrnig roles...etc. and so on. This is no longer happening - we're simply watching actor-wannabes poorly replace actors.

But now, sadly, there are less and less actors out there with 'known quality acting.' for the big screen. Why? They simply don't have a chance to hone their skills on the small screen (TV), since there's no need for TV producers to pay for real actors - they can simply pick up any trash on the street with anytype of unusual situation, lump them in with a few other 'freaks' and POOF! Instant reality show.

I predict that in the near future, Hollywood movies will decline in quality even more than they have already declined. Whatever happened to creative genius and GOOD QUALITY films? Stuff like Vertigo, Last of the Mohicans (Daniel Day Lewis), Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Bladerunner, The Original Star Wars, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Maltese Falcon, Casablanca, One Flew over the Cuckoo's Nest, Dead Poets Society, and the like?!? (I know, some of those movies are classics, others are fairly new).

They just don't make them like they used to in Hollywood, and we have only our own obession with our own hum-drum 15 minutes of fame to blame.

Current TV? Yawn. (Except for Battlestar Galactica, of course! :D )

End Rant

How about Princeton vs. University of Michigan?

M.D. Holloway 09-12-2006 10:13 AM

my money is on the African Americans - they are the best athletes, then again the Asians are pretty smart. They can problem solve better than any of them of course the Latinos are hard workers and if any of the huts need a roof or if any landscaping needs to be done, they are all over it!

The Whites don't stand a chance unless they can bribe or buy the win - maybe they could figuer out a way to get the other groups to do some in fighting.

notfarnow 09-12-2006 10:16 AM

Yep, definitely a new low.

They should do a PPOT one. Republicans vs Democrats... heck, they could even go find Mul. I'd watch that.

If any of them Whites are Italians, then all bets are off...

Disclaimer: The Mafia doesn't exsist - but if they did, they're the nicest bunch of guys I ever met...

or maybe a Prison system reality show...with little tests like

who can fabricate a knife like weapon the fastest, bonus points for actually demonstrating it's effectivness on one of the other teams

shower test, who can wear out the bar of soap by washing , must switch hands , hand may not be enclosing the bar of soap.. he who drops the bar.. has to pick it up

tattoo contest ( for the creative team members )

bare knuckle B-Ball

bare knuckle boxing

escape test

etc etc...

great family entertainment

I’m not surprised that such a show winds up on television since it is the lowest common denominator as far as entertainment is concerned. I got rid of my TV the day Simpson drove his bronco through every channel on it all day long back in 95. My housemate and I simply put it on the street and from that day on aside for the occasional viewing at say a burrito shop, friends house, or airport, I never see it. No television in my house for eleven years now. Conflict and violence have become a focal point in the current incarnation of American culture and it self perpetuates & exacerbates this problem to flood TV, news papers, and movies with ball sweat ideas like reality TV that exploit such sensitive racial issues. Sadly enough the old saying "give the people what they want" is a destructive force. Its enactment tends to destroy creativity when you give the stupid people what they want since they greatly outnumber the intelligent ones.

Simply put, it is the original idea that is generated by the few that becomes parroted by the masses. So one can only wonder what occurs when the masses generate the idea.

Homer had a Bronco? I never saw that episode...

rsNINESOOPER 09-12-2006 11:25 AM
