Do sociopaths know they're sociopaths?

Also, how does one tell they're dealing with a sociopath?

i don't think they're aware of it. they're caught up in who they are, and too self-focused to notice.

Typically, they know. You cannot be unknowingly deceitful. Sociopaths seem to recognize they are different from others, frequently believing they are superior in that they can easily manipulate. Sociopaths appear to believe a moral person is a stupid person. Thay are adept at rationalizing their immorality as intelligence.

You usually are not aware of an individual's sociopathology, many times never realizing it. As with almost all personality disorders, the variability of expression is very broad. A personaity trait becomes a disorder when it is overly dominant. When the trait can be described as consistently injurious to self or others it becomes a disorder.

I don't know the answer to your question... "Do sociopaths know they're sociopaths?"

But I do know they are not a lot of fun to be around.

Also sounds like the Profile of a professional "lifelong" politician.

I detected little if any difference.

In general, most people consider themselves normal or better than normal. The only time people question their behavior is when it has failed them badly many times. However, it is still easier to blame everybody else.

Oddly, this is the only forum I have ever frequented where sociopath discussions come up...

To question your sanity is a sign of being sane. Insane people think they are fine and nothing is wrong with them.

Sociopaths??? Maybe it's just another name for a misfit who doesn't want to toe the line.

From here. Socrates - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Socratic Paradoxes

Many of the beliefs traditionally attributed to the historical Socrates have been characterized as "paradoxical" because they seem to conflict with common sense.
The following are among the so-called Socratic Paradoxes.

* No one desires evil.
* No one errs or does wrong willingly or knowingly.
* Virtue—all virtue—is knowledge.
* Virtue is sufficient for happiness.

I knew one in HS

he was friendly, made friends easily, funny, and always looked for fun things to do, and ripped them off if they had anything he wanted without blinking an eye and he just kept on ticking

once i told him that i would slap the crap out of him if he ripped off one of my friends specifically named. He ripped them off and it took me over 6 months to see him on the streets again. He ran, i caught him, smacked him into face blood all over. Then i called the guy who he ripped off and told him where to find him after i carried off my deed. He was pounded 2x before dinner. He was nuts and even though he was relatively big he didn't have enough "crazy" to be a good fighter

he was a crook true and true

after HS his endeavors grew into adult scams to the point he won a case with the PD that they tried to drop him off the 6th floor at HQ trying to get him to confess to a murder while hanging him off the edge by his feet. He didn't confess. Needless to say he died early in life.

Some of us do, and have known it from an early age. Since I was about 10 years old, I have known that I don't like people. I don't like to be around them, and I don't crave human interaction. I am perfectly fine being by myself. You can count the number of friends I have on both hands. But, with that said, I have no wish to harm anyone (unless forced), and just want to leave them alone, and be left alone. Most people I meet think I'm a funny, and nice guy.

Am I crazy? Probably.

Do I think I am better than anyone else? No, just the opposite. I have a HUGE inferiority complex.

Told you I was nuts!

Well Ronin, in school I did test higher than average IQ. I am a textbook example of an underachiever. I was so bored in school, that i hated being there.

Hmm... asocial. See, I can't even be a proper sociopath!

The things I learn here never cease to amaze me.

As the son of a sociopath, I feel like I have a unique ability to pick them out pretty easily.

There are A LOT of them out there, and most people don't notice them with just casual interaction.

I can talk to anyone once and have no idea. I can talk to someone twice and have suspicions. (Are their explanations for things changing? Are they remembering past events completely differently then they happened? Are they trying to convince you of something that isn't true or expecting you to go along with their BS because they are charming and popular?) I can talk to someone three times and know for sure.

Overwhelmingly, sociopaths rely on goodwill from their victims that allows them to take advantage. When I start seeing certain behaviors my radar goes off.

You have to realize that sociopaths range from people that can be manipulative sometimes to people that are manipulative all the time. Some want money, some attention, and some affection.

I can relate. I get a gut feeling that something is "off"... Or not right about a person.

I've never wrong but it took me some years before I realized what I was feeling.
It's weird but now at 46 I can almost smell them. I can't describe it any better than that.

For instance I can tell when someone has a criminal history or is hiding something.

... Some years ago I was considering buying an old Alfa Romero. I saw a local one for sale and called the owner to setup an appointment.
I turned up on time and as soon as I met him I felt there was something off. He didn't do anything out of the ordinary, I just got that feeling.
Anyways... I looked at the car and asked if I could test drive it. He said he would take me for a drive but wouldn't let me drive the car.
I thought that was unusual but figured he was just being cautious. So we went for a drive and the car seemed fine from the passenger seat but that feeling seemed to be getting stronger and stronger...
Eventually I made some excuse and asked if he could return to his house. Once we were back I said, let me think about it, left and went home... I couldn't get away from that guy quick enough.

That night I'm watching the news... The second story was about a guy who had killed his wife and hid her body in the roof of their house. They commented she had been missing for about 12 weeks.
I didn't pay much attention until they mentioned the suburb the "couple" lived in. Same as the Alfa seller....

As I sat up I saw the news footage of the very same guy that took me for a test drive the day before being led out of the house in handcuffs.

I dated one a long time ago for about two weeks. As the conversations added up, so did conflicting stories/facts of her life. Sing "she tells you she's an orphan after you meet her family..."(Black Crows?). She stole my credit card and signed her first name and my last. I was lucky and only lost $50. before I got rid off her. She called a few times later and couldn't understand why I wouldn't see her anymore! She was articulate, intelligent, pretty, and affectionate. Wait, I guess I actually came out ahead with her...

Gowan's "Crimminal Mind" explains it all.
You see my hands are steady
You've seen my face before
Soon you can take your last look
And they'll close the door
I stand accused before you
I have no tears to cry
And you will never break me
Till the day I die

(chorus)
A criminal mind
Is all I
All I've ever known
They tried to reform me
But I'm made of cold stone
My criminal mind
Is all I
All I've ever had
Ask one who's known me
If I'm really so bad...
I AM

I've spent my life behind these steel bars
I've paid my debt in time
But being brought to justice
That was my only crime
I don't regret a single action
I'd do the same again
These prison walls secure me
And I'm numb to pain

repeat chorus

Before you hand me over
Before you read my sentence
I'd like to say a few words
Here in my own defense...
Some people struggle daily
They struggle with their conscience
Till the end
I have no guilt to haunt me
I feel no wrong intent

A criminal mind
Is all I
All I've ever known
Dont' try to reform me
Cuz I'm made of cold stone
My criminal mind
Is all I've ever had
Ask one who's known me
If I'm really so bad...
I AM

I'm made of cold stone
Just like your prison walls
A criminal mind
I AM
