Neighbor just picked up a 2.6 liter 6 banger 190e, 1992, with 244,000 miles, paid $2k cash. Sounds like it runs well. Didn't take a ride in it but the car looked solid and it looks easy to get at stuff in the engine bay. I wouldn't touch the Daimler Chrysler stuff with a 10 foot pole... Any thoughts on the older stuff?

This from people with old Porsches. Your current cars are much more difficult to work on than old MBs.

A 190 series would be from a period of time, (not terribly long ago), when Mercedes were without question the best cars in the world. When they were new, they could not really be compared w/ other cars on a dollar-for-dollar basis, IMO, because there was nothing else like them. This is no longer true, but they are arguably still the best cars made due to safety engineering, if not build quality. Your neighbor's car w/ 200k might still have some decent years left if it's been maintained, but a lower mile example would be a little tank for very cheap and still have better safety engineering than 90% of 2007 cars. And as far as build quality/engineering/materials, you could spend $150k on a new SL55 and it would not even compare to the 190E.
