Govt Coup in Thailand

Just announced that there are tanks surrounding the Govt buildings and palace in the capital of Thailand....

Damm, means that wonderful beaches will be off limits for a while! Very interesting country but can be really unstable at times.

The nice thing about Thai politics, is that above the corrupt and constantly feuding politicans sits a monarchy that is widely respected by everyone in Thailand.

Although the monarchy goes out of its way not to meddle in politics, the military sometimes does - AND the military is always loyal to the king.

If you were cynical you might suspect the military of being the proxy for the king when the politicians get out of line.

But the current government is headed by a very rich oligarch (Thaksin) who is widely considered corrupt and incompetent, and a coup like this is a very nice way of getting the Thai political house back in order.

I can't help but think how useful it would be to have a benign monarch in the US, to whom the military was completely loyal. A coup in the US is long overdue.

There have been at least three already.

1. Replaced the Articles of Confederation with the Constitution at a convention called ONLY to amend the Articles. The Articles state that it forms a perpetual union, which could not be replaced.

2. Lincoln launches an invasion of states that have withdrawn lawfully from the Union of states formed when they withdrew from the Articles of Confederation, and by conquest forces them to return, thereby replacing a government meant to be an agent of the states with a centrally controlled dictatorship to the states.

3. Roosevelt further guts the balance of power between the three branches of government, consolidating executive power at such a high level that the other two branches are little more than servants for the executive branch.
