Damn sinus headache

Sudafed and Advil aren't cutting it. It feels like I've got a finger in an eye socket poking at my frontal lobe. Think I'm going to steam my face to relieve the pressure. Any fellow sufferers in here? What do you do?

Although its not entirely 'correct' treatment in most cases - antibiotics will often have effect. But donīt quote me on that in the presence of an ENT specialist.. ;)

If the feeling is different (worse) from what you have experienced in the past and not getting any better, you may have a sinus infection, if that is the case I would consult a doctor and get some antibiotics.

I have sinus problems and have also had sinus infection, the antibiotics did the job. The pain was much more uncomfortable than just sinus headache.

I huff Swepco or ATE Blue. ;)

Wanna trade for a nice case of neuropathy?

+1. The term "sinus infection" is thrown around pretty loosely, but I actually had a sinus infection a couple of years ago and it was extremely painful. It took $300 worth of antibiotics to kick it.

Could also be temporal arteritis that can cause blindness, can be tested for with a simple blood test; or narrow angle glaucoma, or cavernous sinus thrombosis that can be fatal, time can be of the essence, you need to see a Dr now.

Do you have medical insurance? If so see your Doc., I think there is better stuff than sudafed out there... and I KNOW there is better stuff than Advil ;) If you don't want to see a doctor ask a pharmacist.

I don't mean to be an alarmist, but I treat these kinds of problems. I don't know anything about cantdrv55, age, other health issues, etc. that are important considerations in the probablilty of a diagnosis of a serious problem. But this kind of pain around the eye not relieved by the things tried is serious until proven otherwise. Period.

widgeon13 09-20-2006 12:21 PM

I was just trying to inject some humor but you are correct, this can be a serious issue.

cantdrv55 09-20-2006 12:31 PM

It's just sinus pain, I'm sure. That and the thought of meeting with my kid's principal and athletic director in an hour-and-a-half.

We have one of those Homedics massagers. I put that on full vibrate on the top of my forehead or base of my skull when Advil doesn't kick a tension or sinus headache. Seems like certain allergens can set it off. I think the vibration stimulates blood flow and it works 90% of the time to reduce the intensity of the pain.

Seriously.

tylenol with codeine has worked for me.

Expensive antibiotics...here they cost 10-20 euros per "cure"

rcecale 09-21-2006 04:10 AM

I used to get those headaches...feeling like I've got a railroad spike shoved through my eye socket.

Started doing a Sinus Rinse each morning and evening before going to bed. Did this for about 2 months, about a year ago, and haven't had a headache since. I rinse about once or twice a month now, just because, and it really has made a difference.

Have to admit, it takes a few times to get your "technique" down, but it was so worth the effort.

Gonna try the sinus rinse again. I used to do that but hated the feeling. You're right though that it provides relief.

Benedryl with decon the blue pill.

Nasal flush ! Neti pot, warm saline solution, insert in one nostril tilt head, try not to gag as it comes out the other. Been doing this (it dates back to the Romans) for over 2 years when I feel sinus issues coming on, and have not had a sinus issue or a cold since !
