Dude....i grew up in Miami and bought the party line for YEARS. Since then, i have been to Cuba and found it a weird place with charming people. The reason Castro has stayed in power is that, for the vast majority of Cubans, things got a lot better after Batista was bounced out. The Cuban revolution at its heart was not purely about class but about a caste system based almost purely on race. They were using the very complex Spanish colonial system of categorizing people and trust me, it makes aparthied seem simple. Although the Cuban government denies it vociferously, there is still racial segregation in Cuba. The old rich white neighborhoods on the west side of downtown Havana around the Marina Hemingway and out in Santa Fe are still predominantly "white". Most of the homes of the rich that left were turned over to 3rd world countries for embassies. The folks who stayed still live where they always did.

I remember that when Chavez was speaking, there seemed to be an inordinant amount of empty seats in the hall. Maybe that is the way it always is.

When he concluded, the only parties I saw applauding were Venezula and Cuba, not tht I expect the camera to get everone, but again, the wide angle shot showed a lot of empty seats.

I don't recall anyone laughing anywhere through Chavez's comments.
