Unhappy Sold a family heirloom last weekend

We sold a family heirloom last weekend with mixed emotions.

My wife's previous husband (he was a friend who died young in an airplane crash...long story), had built this in 1989 and won many awards with it and photos of it are still used in various advertisements.

He last flew it in 1995 just prior to his death. It has been sitting in our hangar since then and has been started regularly but not flown. For various corny reasons, I never flew it. Someone heard about it recently and made us an offer. My wife decided to let it go and use the money for our daughter's (my step daughters actually) college education.

It was a sad day when they picked it up. We shot a bunch of pictures of it with my daughters, wife and my daughter's grandmother before it left.

We kept all the awards, calenders, print articles, t-shirts and ect that were associated with it over the years, along with the matching minature pedal Pitts I built for the girls when I first became their new dad 10 yrs ago.

I must admit we ALL teared up as it took off from our runway for the last time. It was meant to fly, but it also was kind of like a keepsake for my wife and daughters.

Thanks for sharing the pics/story. You're 100% right...it was meant to be flown. And I really dig the "pedal Pitts" as well!

I know zilch about planes...but that one looks like a pilot's version of a 550 spyder to me....beautiful.

We still have a '69 Chevelle 396 SS (not numbers matching...was built from three cars) that he had built up in highschool in the late 70's/ early 80's. The wife will not part with it allthough I have had ton's of offers for it and muscle cars are not my cup of tea. She never had problem with selling the Pitts as she did not want to lose another husband to aerobatics, but the Chevelle is probably gonna stay. I did some work on it after we got married per her request and we registered, insured and drove it for a few summers.

I need to get it going again sometime to let the girls drive it a bit now that they are of driving age. But a long term restoration of a "muscle car" is just not going to happen by me. Too many other hobby projects in front of it.

Here it is wasting space in the background.

Tim,

Sorry to see the S1 go but at least its found a good home. They are a handful and if you can land one of those no one will ever ask for your pilots license.

Use the money to help the girls and move on... BTW, you really have a fantastic wife and family. Not all of us are that lucky...

The money from that "Keepsake" is going to be put to good use...an education.....really an investment in the futher. Your friend would have agreed with the decision. It was just time to let it go...

The car is also an heirloom that is a bit more practical...and that is a good memory of your friend as well.

Thumbs up

I also don't know much about planes, but I like them. Same w/ women. Great looking machines and girls, all of them!

It is obvious that you are not being casual about his memory and that you are a great caretaker of the most important items, the people who meant the most to him (and you). The fact that you respect his material things is just a bonus. He could not have wished for a better friend than you from the looks of it.

I was a bit confused by your comment until I realized you were talking about the open door that can be seen in the picture above the 951 and the Chevelle!

It is where my air compressor is located believe it or not. It is an insulated "room" that helps keep the noise from the compressor at a minumum, however during the summer if I am painting or sandblasting,(running the compressor alot) I have to open the door to keep the temperature down. It is a pain to climb up there to service, but it works out pretty well.

Since their real dad died when they were little, I have converted them into German car fans and both drive 924's and are probably the only girls in their rural highschool that have Porsche posters used as book covers.

A couple of scanned pics taken about 9 yrs ago. I had them pose in similar positions last weekend....kinda neat, but kinda sad how time flies.
