no politics? a poll
should political threads be banned? Religion too? Vote.
I for one would like a voluntary 1-day politcal-free day just to see how it feels... |

A no politics and/or religion policy makes for a boring BBS. Just check out miata.net as an example. Car Talk is the closest thing they have to our OT and if it isn't car related, it's gone.
Separate forum if you must but I'd say leave it be. Or, leave politics out of non-political threads as a policy. Don't know if that's enforceable though. Last edited by cantdrv55; 09-25-2006 at 09:23 AM.. |

I think we should be able to vote people off the island.

I like the seperate forum for it. It would lighten up O/T so much.

But they would sneak back in. It is the nature of such emotional irrational concepts.
As much as I would like to see some self regulation and less posturing, the open forum is probably the best. People can, if they choose, just ignore specific threads or specific posters.

Too bad not more votes here. I really hate name calling personal attacks. Especially when the attacker knows zilch about the person he is attacking. (edit) Things will get worse as the election gets nearer.

Politics and religion can get a bit heavy at times. If something in a particular thread is offensive shouldn't one simply ignore and go to the next thread which they find interesting? This is America right? I just DO
NOT feel that censorship is the answer. Vote at the cash register. Sure seems easy enough to me. |

There are a few people who's threads I simply do not read, because I know they are simply closed-minded, and do not offer a true exchange of ideas.
Other threads degenerate into the same finger pointing, again with no real conversation. I quit following them. Then there are the thought provoking threads that challenge my thinking. These help sharpen me, and are worthwhile. Since I have no moderator duties, I can simply ignore the useless name calling, so I vote to keep things as they are. If you don't agree, you're a poopy-head. Neener-neener. |

Dantilla:
That is really the problem.. Sides have been chosen, positions chisled in stone, minds ossified, and responses predictable, boring and generally irrelevant. Very little in the way of honest exchange, and the more "dedicated" the poster, the less honesty in the posts. Still, the occasional postting comes along that makes one think. Those rare gems make sifting through the dross worthwhile.

I don't think the political threads are the problem. I think there are some posters who tend to turn threads into name calling sessions (I have been guilty in the past but am trying to reform myself, lol).
Honestly there are about 3 posters whose posts I simply skip over when I am reading a thread because I know what is in there...the same name calling partisan crapola that doesn't do anything for the discussion. I wish that the name callers would reign it in and allow threads to be polite discussions, but in today's world I just don't see that happening. I don't think banning all political threads will work though, first politics will ALWAYS sneak in there somewhere and second, OT would be more boring without the political threads.

I actually like the separate forum idea. It would really help keep things simple, clear and efficient.
