I have my Passport here in my desk, right next to my .45.
That's pretty damn American.

I have a voter's registration card. It works to get into Canada and into the US. They allow it because you have to be a US citizen to vote, therefore a registration card is proof of citizenship.

After Dec 31 2006, Passports will be required for all air and sea travel between the US and Canada. For now, ground travel checkpoints across the border still accept a certified copy of the birth certificate plus a photo ID issued by your state of residence. I can't say that you have not gotten away with it, but the voter registration card is specifically mentioned as unacceptable on the US State Dept website. After Dec 31 2007, a passport will be required for all travel by any means.
