Got Taken?....Who is the lucky new owner?
I was at a gas station about a block form my house on Sat. A guy pulled in with a really nicely sorted out 73.5 911T with the 2.4 on the back of a trailer. I got to talking to him and realized fairly quickly he didn’t know too much about long hoods or 911s in general. He mentioned he was a bit sad b/c he was on his way to deliver the car to its new owner. He was meeting the guy in Salisbury NC. the buyer had driven down from DC.
The guy was very affable and nice. He mentioned that he restores split window VW buses and that he got the car on trade from a guy who he restored a bus for who then could not full pay his bill. He then said he was proud of his sale and that he doubled his profits. I said oh really what did you get for the car, $10,500..........Pause........... I said $10,500?!?!?!?!? I started to look the car over better it was on a pretty tall trailer so I could see under the car all the way around, no rust, new SSIs, new tires, great set of Fuchs, no oil dripping or anything wet, body real straight, very nice int., etc..... So how did you double your profits? Well the guy who traded me the car owed me $5500. I go UMMMM does the car not run or something? Says no runs great, pops open the door, keys are in it in neutral he pushes the clutch in with his right hand and cranks it with his left fires right up! Does it have a salvaged title or something? Nope. Why? Man you are getting SERIOUSLY taken on this car!!!!!!!! Not to mention a 2.4 with working A/C and heat, new SSIs, straight body and a rebuilt tranny is worth a helluva lot more than that. He started to get worried I said where did you advertise this car. He said something called SAMBA it is a VW forum. I go on about the car a little more and told him how my mechanic just sold his 73.5 911T and how much he got for it and it didn't even run right and he starts to panic, do I just go back home, do I meet the guy and ask for more money, etc...? I say, whoa man I am not your advisory committee here I am just saying you are getting seriously taken on this deal. I then said do you know anyone else you could call for instance have you ever had this car at any of the shops around here and I rattle them off. He said yes Stuttgart House I know the owner. I said I know him too I almost bought his SC that he sold to buy a Cayman he is very knowledgable call him right now! My wife was with me b/c we were going shopping for work cloths for me which sucked and she was getting really impatient she had already walked over to me twice so I had to go. The seller knew what Pelican was and the buyer form DC was a Pelican himself. So I am waiting to see a post about this possible purchase or not this morning.

Really nice way to ruin someone day. He thought he was making a killing by selling it for twice what the PO owed him.
Probably ruin the buyer day too because the seller probably back out of the deal. If he's a Pelican he will know who let the cat out of the bag on this one. |

And I am fine with that too, I mean who is worse the guy getting taken or the guy doing the taking? Whoever this buyer is he had to know he was seriously taking this guy and maybe he got away with it and maybe he didn't. When you are getting one over on someone you have to expect the worse so if he drove down from DC and went back w/o a car then that is something he should have been prepared for.

Person 1: knows he got a good deal buying the car
Person 2: thought he had a good price on the sale

Yhea for the time being but where is person 2 a week after the sale when he realizes he got raped???? There is no 12 step program or support group for that one. Plus, I really liked this guy he was cool, very friendly, etc...... Person 1, I haven't the first clue about that guy but going off the fact that he jumped all over this deal and offerd to drive form DC that day I would peg him as questionable to say the least.

KWM you are right there is certainly a lot of money being left on the table BUT i don't think it's fair to the buyer to point that out.
Suppose you had found the listing on Samba (i don't see it; must be an older listing) and were in the market? Would you offer more than asking if you didn't have to? I do hope the car isn't going to a flipper but rather a person who couldn't afford the car otherwise OR perhaps somebody who will spend the money he saved on the car on more goodies for it.

Well done. You did the right thing.
Spreading knowledge about our special cars is a good thing, period. When I read threads about people who got cars or parts way too cheap, IMO, 8 times out of 10 it's a flipper or dealer doing the screwing. If more owners were knowledgeable there would be less opportunities for people to be taken advantage of, and in the small community of longhood owners, that's to be desired, I think. |

Ever hear the phrase "Mind your own F%$^^%g bussiness"?? Unless YOU were going to throw him a higher offer you had no right to screw with someone else's life... The guy was making a very quick $5K for doing NOTHING and someone was getting a fairly good deal on a car.
Nice one!

It was the guys fault for not educating himself more before he tried to sell.

i don't believe it can be called 'screwing' when we are talking about a free market. Particularly in the present day with soooo much info available on the 'net.
and i am certainly not impressed by a guy who gave thought to demanding more money from the buyer after he drove several hours to get the car. THAT we most certainly do not need from early car owners.

I don't see the seller being hurt here. As he states, he doubled his money so he is happy. The buyer got it for a good price so he would be happy too. I doubt even a 2.4 with CIS in excellent condition is going to see much more than $15K.

I found a new job a year ago, and when I inform my previous boss that I was leaving, he offered me an additional $10,000 to stay plus an additional week of vacation. I could have told the new boss that I change my mind because my old boss was going to give me a lot more money and an addditional week of vacation. But I have already informed the new boss that I was accepting their offer for employment. A man is only as good as his word. |

How did I Fup the seller's day? My mechanic just sold his 73.5 2.4 911T with CIS for $16,500 and it didnt even run correctly. Ok first off I am not saying I would not have pulled the same move as the prospective buyer and ran down here to NC to get the car BUT I would expect to have whatever could go worng go wrong b/c I am getting one over on someone and not doing a good thing. If I got the deal done and car in my garage would I have driven the hell out of it and loved every minute of my $10m purchase well HELL YES but if it is too good to be ture I would expect something to go wrong and in my life it always does. I don't regret what I did at all, not one bit. F^%$ the guy in DC! This seller lives right here in my town and goes to a shop I have been to so like I said screw the guy in DC. I hope he burned $200 in gas driveing to NC. Plus the guy selling this car was naything but wealth I can tell you that.

Does a handshake make that OK? Is there a handshake defense against fraud? "Well, your honor, the plaintiff Mr. Dumbass said he'd sell me his house for a dollar and we SHOOK on it. Case dismissed!" Hell, no. Fact is, all we know about the transaction is that the seller didn't have a clue. Did the buyer take advantage of that and try to get one over on the guy? Is that a good thing? Don't know for sure, but I'm disturbed most people here seem to think that's just fine. |

I think it's important to point out that a quick look at the car in a parking lot hardly justifies making assumptions as to value. Who knows what issues were lurking but not readily apparent... That perhaps the buyer (and seller????) were aware of but were not disclosed in the conversation between he and KWM...
Also, if the 911 was in that great a shape I'm suprised the guy didn't want to keep it. Must be missing some cards in his deck... ;-) Eric
