Prison justice

Interesting story from the AP. I always heard that child molesters were at the low end of the criminal's totem pole, but I was never sure if that was really true.

Inmate tattooed with child victim's name

An inmate serving a life term for molesting and killing a 10-year-old girl named Katie somehow got "Katie's Revenge" tattooed across his forehead, and prison authorities were trying to determine how it happened.

The Indiana Department of Correction placed Anthony Ray Stockelman, 39, in protective custody away from the general inmate population last weekend after authorities discovered the tattoo, said Rich Larsen, a spokesman for the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility.

Stockelman was sentenced to life in prison after pleading guilty to abducting, molesting and killing Katlyn "Katie" Collman. Katie was missing for five days before her body was found Jan. 30, 2005, in a creek about 15 miles from her home in the southern Indiana town of Crothersville.

Larsen refused to comment on what Stockelman has said about it or what else investigators have learned. He said he did not know how a picture of the crude tattoo was taken and distributed outside the prison, including on the Internet.

Collman's father, John Neace, said he heard about the tattoo from friends and believes it was the work of inmates.

"If I had to guess I'd say it's a statement from the inmates," he said Wednesday. Neace said has no idea whether his late daughter's distant cousin, who is also serving time at Wabash, played any role.

Stockelman's tattoo, which covers nearly his entire forehead, has "KATIE'S" in large letters and "REVENGE" below in smaller letters.

The search for Katie, a bright child who enjoyed basketball and the Disney Channel, had consumed Crothersville. Police initially believed she was abducted and slain so she would not reveal methamphetamine activity in her neighborhood.

Investigators had interviewed Stockelman early on because he matched the description of a man seen with the girl. Then another man told police that he was involved in the murder. That confession was eventually shown to be false as evidence pointed investigators back to Stockelman and DNA from the crime scene was found to match his.

A message seeking additional comment left Thursday for an Indiana Department of Correction spokesman was not immediately returned.

I can verify that inmate code of conduct is as you describe. Murderers and muggers are fairly respected. Snitches and woman-beaters and especially folks who commit violent crimes against children are not respected. They are abhorred. The part about this story that surprises me is the lenience the inmates have shown to Mr. Stockelman. So far. It is my guess that Mr. Stockelman is sexually active, if you know what I mean.

Something tells me they're not done yet. :>)

They ought to just go ahead and strap these guys into an electric chair right in the courtroom. If the jury walks out and delivers a guilty verdict, throw the switch. Not guilty? He can leave.

I think this should become SOP for murderers, rapists, and child molesters. I'd be happy for my tax dollars to pay for that tattoo.

Guaranteed that it's true.
Most ask to be placed in "protective custody"...

Typical highschool mentallity. Get bored, pick on the weak/creepy. If I was locked up (knock on wood) it would bring me great pleasure to terrorize pedos.

Definately true of inmates. Couple of years ago we had 2 guys on Long Island put in jail for something similar. They didn't last more than two days. Found them beat to within inches of their lives. I seem to remember one of them died or nearly died. And I think this happened before they had a trial, in court that is.

You've go to know that he didn't lie quietly while they put that HUGE thing on his forehead. I imagine they "encouraged" him to be still. I'm picturing a toothbush-knife to the b@lls.

I just hope that our tax dollars don't pay for laser treatment to have that removed.

I bet most people here would be begging for protective custody themselves. I suspect Jail is no place for normal civilized people, no matter what they've been accused or convicted of.

+10.

I'm impressed with the spelling, penmanship and the proper use of the apostrophe with the singular possessive.

It's comforting to know that convicted felons have an "honor code"... pretty ironic if you ask me, they're all scum.

Hey, I'd pay to have it removed.

As long as he went straight back into general population and got it done again.

Prison justice seems international. Child molester/murderer in Melbourne. Don't know where the other inmates got the barbed wire from but he certainly needed help to pee for a while.
The amusing thing was they had some left over for when he finally got out of the hospital wing.

As soon as some guards "look the other way".

When his nose starts to run, they will know he's full and he can be discarded.

They could remove the tattoo with a chainsaw.
